bphaedrus Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I really enjoyed Brant Gardner's Second Witness books. What is the best commentary on the D&C out there? Thanks
salgare Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I remember getting one years ago. Referenced History of the Church so much, I bought the 50 dollar paper back set, and read them all. That's my suggestion.
Duncan Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I have found that they are all different. I liked Joseph McConkie's "Revelations of the Restoration" C. Max Caldwell's two volume work and Stephen Robinson and Dean Garrett's work. The Church has produced something of a commentary in the Revelations in Context Series. https://history.lds.org/section/revelations?lang=eng 1
filovirus Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I second "Revelations of the Restoration". 1

Michael Sanders Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Robert Woodford "The Historical Development of the Doctrine & Covenants" - 3 Volumes Lyndon Cook "The Revelations of the Prophet Joseph Smith" Michael Marquardt "The Joseph Smith Revelations" Steven Harper "Making Sense of the Doctrine & Covenants" Milton Backman & Richard Cowan "Joseph Smith and the Doctrine & Covenants" Lyndon Cook & Donald Cannon "The Far West Record" not a commentary per say but invaluable companion study as with "Kirtland Council Minute Book" The Joseph Smith Papers has added new insights to several of Joseph Smith's revelations - BYU Studies published several articles on this.
