I see nobody maligning Elder Dunn. Just commenting on what happened. You probably did feel the spirit when you heard him speak gospel truths, which were the basis of his stories. While on my mission in the early 70s I think many missionaries (including myself) had some of his talks memorized. Most people use parables to illustrate a gospel principle; including Jesus. The spiritual feelings you had were real; the only problem Dunn had is that his parables were supposedly about himself; whereas Jesus spoke mostly in the third person of fictional characters He made up to make His point. 1

I think that the holy spirit testifies to teachings that are true. But not to stories real or imagined. Elder Dunn's spiritual talks contained very spiritual teachings. His stories complimented the true teachings. However, elder dunn got caught, he apologized and all is forgiven. Who is perfect? If you listen to his talks you will hear great teachings mixed with possible embellished stories when he played baseball or was in the war. But the teachings were spot on. Thus, the spirit testifying to them.
