About 15 mbps/second...but that's more due to Canada having 3rd world internet service. I'm not even exaggerating, we have some of the worst in the world. Mostly due to an oligopoly and price control between the big 3 isp's.

Here's another one for you. We all have additional charges on our phone bills that are supposed to be for making Internet service available in hard to access areas, like Paragonah, Utah. However, I don't think they're getting used for that purpose.

CenturyLink has done line tests to confirm the suckiness and sent people over to try to fix it.  It slightly improved, but they said there was a "length of cable" under the main street and they wouldn't be getting to that.

I hate them so, so much.

We have a desktop computer that's about 7 years old and it's slow to begin with.  It's torture. We have a wireless adapter on it and we had to purchase the router from CenturyLink.  We were supposed to be paying for 40, which is what I wrote down when I called to sign up.  I wrote down the reference number too.  When one rep told me they don't have 40 available in my area, I offered to give her the reference number so they could listen to what the lady told me, but she said the number wouldn't do her any good.  I said, "What's the point of a reference number then?!"  After multiple calls, we got a guy to admit we were paying for 40.  Then they said they wouldn't be able to adjust our bill retroactively until the problem was fixed.  I said, "Uhhhhh ..... Doesn't that give you motivation to NOT fix it?"  Rather than keep things the way they were and charge me less, they bumped me down to the slower plan, which made things ever slower.  They initially tried to charge me even more!  Nightmare.  We have a 3 year price lock, so either we will switch to Frontier when it comes or figure out something else.  Definitely not going to pay more for this ridiculousness.

You need to quit beating around the bush and tell us what you really think about CenturyLink.

Don't hold back; it's therapeutic.

download 12.75 Mbps, upload 0.78 Mbps

Talked to a new ISP just last month, and may be switching soon.

Sounds like you have a choice.

Most people don't.

Comcast is a lot more than what we're paying here and our neighbors have told us Comcast has the same speed problems in our neighborhood.  I've heard Frontier is starting to bring FIOS to our town, so I'm holding out for that.  We had it in our old town and it was awesome.  I miss it so much.

Comcast is a mixed bag. In some places, it's great. In others, it's marginal.

It's also one of those companies that quite a few people really hate, mostly because of their predatory pricing where they have a monopoly.

We dumped CenturyLink a few months ago and went with Comcast.  Same price but much, much faster.

Our experience with CenturyLink internet was much the same -- I was commanded by my non-techy sweetheart to try out CL's internet because it was theoretically "cheaper", and so I did.  It was like going back to dialup.  Once this became clear, I quietly dumped CL and went back to Comcast -- actually, now they are called Xfinity.

I maintain a copper-wire landline telephone for our house with CenturyLink, but our Internet and TV are Xfinity.  The reason for the old-fashioned landline instead of the more "modern" VOIP is that if we have a power outage (which occasionally happens here every five or six years due to weather) then with VOIP we lose connectivity (no power for the modem), but copper landline still stays ON.  Because CenturyLink has independent power.  Add to that the fact that we live in the same circuit area as Washington state government, even when there is a widespread power outage we are among those re-powered first.  While friends of ours out more in the country can take days and sometimes weeks.

I just tested my speed and on my desktop (using Cat 5 ethernet cable) I'm pushing 95 mbps down and 12 mbps up.  On the other hand, my new Dell laptop is WiFi only, and I get 125 mbps down and 12 mbps up.  Of course, this is a 5 in the morning when I'm the only one online (I think), so perhaps it is slower at other times.

It might be of interest to point out that CenturyLink is slowly rolling out 1 gigabit internet service.  That means 1,000 mbps!  Which blows away the OP's crowing about  a mere 180 mbps.

Unfortunately, this is only available in "select" cities so far.  We are too far out in the "sticks" to be so honored.  Even if we ARE the state capital.  Seattle is Big, therefore they get the good stuff.

At last! Someone who wants to do some serious trash talking.

Comcast has business gigabit Internet in our area and we're thinking (at work) about getting it. At somewhere around $800 /month, I don't think I'll get it for home.

Let me know when you get gigabit service at your house. I'll gladly concede the title - for a month or two, at least.

On the other hand, there's not much out there on the other end that can feed stuff back to me at my 180 mbps. If I see something coming in at over 10 MBPS for a download, it's a good site.

You know, I hadn't thought about that until you mentioned it.  If the modems on the far end can't feed at 1000 mbps then you can't get it at 1000 mbps.  Hmmm.

But I AM going into Comcast/Xfinity tomorrow to do a service change (don't need a thousand TV channels any more, sadly), and I will see if they can bump my internet speed up some!  I'll let you know how that goes.

If you get the Blast package, it should have 150 mbps as its rated speed. That's what I have, but I consistently test out at 180 mbps.

If you rent your modem / router from Comcast, you should get the rated speed. I dropped my hardware rentals a while back and got my own stuff. Just have to make sure the modem is DOCSIS 3.0 and the router has true gigabit WAN/LAN ports on it.

I also don't do wireless on my router (separate access point) which I think helps the router be more stable. The radio's been turned off.

This has nothing at all to do with religious topics. It is a blatant, "see how great I am", egotistical, unrepentant, showy thread being created solely for purposes of one-upping anyone else who might post. Gratuitous geek trash talking, along with unearned rep points are welcome.

So here's the question:

How fast is your home Internet speed?

Mine just got increased to 180 mbps.

Beat that, if you will.

Pffft

My download speed is 17 point something. My upload speed is .81. I'm paying for a lot more than that, but CenturyLink sucks and they won't stop sucking. I. Hate. Them. I haven't been able to keep up on my family blog because pictures upload so slowly. And YouTube videos. It takes over 3 hours to upload a 5 minute video!

I'm in the slow internet club too. :/

Looked at Comcast once but they wanted to run a cable from the power line across my front yard. Might have been handy, all multipurposed as a clothesline, if we had let them do it.

Just tested on my phone. 11.29 download. .21 upload, though the first test was .79 on the upload. Didn't check my computer as it is off and I'm in bed.

We've had people try to sell us faster speeds, but we just laugh. We have 5 phones, 2 laptops, one desk top and a TV that only does Netflix and we really haven't had problems doing anything we have needed to do. If DH started working at home more we would probably increase the speed, but the little he does really hasn't affected us at this point.

OK, just tested on my computer.  We have 13.58 download and .81 upload.  Looked to see what we are paying for it is 12, so that's good.  :)
