Stargazer Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Meridian Magazine reports that this video released by the LDS Church has "gone viral". At the time I am posting this topic, the views stand at only 165,000. Is that "viral"? Or is it being copied and repeated elsewhere? http://www.ldsmag.com/article/1/15044 Anyway, I think it is a very nicely done video and I am glad they put it out there. Here's a liink to the actual video on YouTube:
Buckeye Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 I'm not sure if "viral" is the correct word, but several members in my ward mentioned the video during services yesterday, including the GD teacher. FWIW, I do not believe the church intends this video to be shared "virally," as it may intend to happen with, say, Meet the Mormons. The garment video is more of a resource to use in the appropriate situation to discuss sacred things with friends or family.

They've done everything they could to make sure as many people as possible see it, so it seems odd to assume that the church doesn't want it be widely shared. They put it up on the church's newsroom website, released it on YouTube, gave an interview on it to the Salt Lake Tribune, have the video and article up on Deseret News, and wrote an article about it in the Church News which includes exact information on how to find the video.

The original video was going viral, it had 500 thousand views, but it was removed http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/church-updates-temple-garment-video I hope the new version reaches 500,000 views again, because there are too many videos that mock the temple. I hope the newsroom temple video appears in the Youtube "related videos" of every LDS temple related video.

He was less happy about it, but then, he's a little old school like myself. The consensus among those who think it wasn't necessary seems to be that it was tastefully done, revealed nothing specific, but was still not for public consumption. In other words, they don't fault the video, just question whether it was right to do it.
Daniel2 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 The feedback and comments on this video that I have read across the LGBT community websites are that it is ironic and hypocritical that the Mormon Church is calling for equal respect and dignity for sacred LDS underclothes that is afforded to other religions' vestments, yet the LDS leadership contunues to engage in prolongued campaigns to deny equal respect, dignity, and civil rights for same-sex weddings, spouses, and families for religions that support such. They usually read something along the lines of, "Once you respect the sacredness of my relarionship with my husband/wife/family, we can talk about respecting the sacredness of your underwear."Food for thought.

Can they really not see how hypocritical that is? The pro SSM community would have a giant screaming fit if the church told them "first agree with us on SSM and only then will we treat you with respect" but it's ok for them to do that to the church??This idea that you shouldn't be respectful of anyone unless they agree with you is so messed up.My esteem for gay and lesbians has gone down a few notches. I don't know how to have a relationship with anyone that would demand such terms.

I don't know how to have a relationship with anyone that would demand such terms.Nope. That's not what I have said or am saying at all. I'm not sure how you got that from what I said. What I am suggesting is that respect is most quickly earned when respect is freely given. Rather like... do unto others as you would have them do unto you.Being respectful and acknowledging a mutual right to peaceful coexistence is not the same thing as cowtowing in utter capitulation or surrender of anyone's beliefs.Surely you can see that there are others who supportor at least acknowledge the right for others to enter into A same-sex marriage without personally condoning it from either a religious or a moral perspective. There are many Mormons who firmly believe and preach the alcohol or premarital sex are immoral, but do not demean, mock, belittle or legislate away others' right to engage in such.If Mormons cannot see the difference, then my esteem for Latter-day Saints just went down a few notches... so right back at ya. ;-)
bluebell Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Being respectful and acknowledging a mutual right to peaceful coexistence is not the same thing as cowtowing in utter capitulation or surrender of anyone's beliefs. In what way is the church trying to stop gay and lesbians from coexisting? If the answer is "by not supporting SSM" then how can the church encourage that kind of coexistence without surrendering their beliefs?

In fact, it happens ALL the time.I'm conscious that we're straying afar from the topic, though, and am content to let my remarks stand without further tangentalizing.

As for legislating against things the church teaches as sinful-drinking is not a sin for those who haven't covenanted not to do it. And if the government tried to legitimize premarital sex by making laws supporting it the church would definitely work against that.
