Conference Choirs

As I listen to the beautiful choir music in the conference sessions, I find myself itching to try out the arrangements with my own ward choir (a sensitivity that is an occupational condition of being a ward choir director).

I wish there were some way to make selected arrangements from conference music accessible -- perhaps on a limited basis -- for performance by ward and stake choirs. But alas, as I glance at the conference music list (I get a copy in advance for professional reasons) I find that the music is either commercially published or, as is the case with much Mack Wilberg work, unpublished.

And yes, I'm too cheap to pay for sheet music, as I find there is an abundance of choral music on the Internet -- from both LDS and non-LDS sources -- that is free for non-profit incidental or church use.

That's one of several.

We've already performed a number of Sally's arrangements, including the one we did last time, her arrangement of her own composition, "If the Savior Stood beside Me."

I've also tried my hand at arranging on my own, though I don't do it much anymore. Takes too much time.

There's a lot of beautiful stuff in the public domain -- including Handel's "Messiah." We're starting to work on "Behold the Lamb of God" for performance at Christmas time.

What about writing Mack Wiberg and ask for permission (and copies) to use his unpublished work?

Not a bad idea.

The worst that could happen is being told "no," right?

I've been told "no" before and survived each and every instance.
