I will agree that the LDS church puts more emhasis than necessay on Sunday, but it's important to remember that even though believers in the NT gathered on Sunday, the Sabbath is Saturday. Keep in mind also the words of Paul in Romans 5 & 6, that "one person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days a like. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord". So it's not a hard and fast rule that Sunday is the only proper day of worship; there is flexibility to which day is observed as "the Sabbath".

If so, what is the underlying principle that allows us to ordain women for purposes of the initiatory but not for purposes of baptisms, confirmations, consecrating oil, administering the sacrament, etc? Without an explanation, the exception risks swallowing the rule. Women are not ordained, they are set apart. Originally the initiatories included a full body washing. Even now, they include clothing that might not be fully "modest" if worn in front of men, nor should two men be together with a woman in a private booth, even if it is only for a few minutes. That is a horrible idea! In the past women were able to give blessings to the sick and perform many other duties we now think of as "priesthood" duties. I would like to see a return to those practices, yet I do not think women should be ordained. All priesthood callings are delegated authority- the ward mission leader is not the bishop, and the bishop is not the stake president, because they are not set apart to be. There is virtually no difference there than setting women apart for their functions. We are taught in the temple that it is more important to break a rule than to break a heart. A spirit of kindness and compassion always trumps "rules" There is no problem with "exceptions swallowing rules". If they need to be broken, they should be broken. They are general guidelines in most cases. We no longer follow the law of Moses and count our steps on the Sabbath- we are to follow the spirit. THAT is the only unbreakable rule. 1

I appreciate this. I personally think that flexibility (in many things) is better.
mnn727 Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Ultimately the difficulty for me is deciding if I believe this kind of behavior is compatible with the True Church. Its not doctrine being changed, its procedure. I don't see the big deal myself.
