seed Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I come across these brief words in scripture. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/nt/1-pet/4.8?lang=eng "8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: afor bcharity shall cover the multitude of sins." So... any ideas on what sins are to be cover by charity? And what is charity in this case? Maybe there is something in other scripture or tradition that further explains, or maybe this is simply one of those parts that is wrong.
thesometimesaint Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Lack of charity is the unwillingness to accept the charity of God towards us in forgiving of our sins. We are forgiven only to the extent to which we forgive others, the greatest of sins .
The Nehor Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Basically if you tip the prostitute enough (charity) it is not a sin.Or did I get that scripture wrong? 2
thesometimesaint Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Basically if you tip the prostitute enough (charity) it is not a sin.Or did I get that scripture wrong? A little off. "It is a crime to pay the prostitute, but no a crime if she gives it away" Man to prostitute: How much do you charge for sex.Prostitute to man: $100,Man to prostitute: How about $20?Prostitute to man. What do you think I am, a cheap whore?Man to prostitute: We've already established that. All we are discussing is price.

THAT post deserves one of those. When I read the OP, my first thought was "I hope it covers a few of mine".
Coreyb Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Its another scripture to blur the lines between whether salvation comes through what a person believes (faith in Christ + grace) or what a person does (repentance, ordinances, good works). 1

You don't think that God has a sense of humor? If he doesn't keep us guessing, we will all just come down on one side and ignore the other. This way, since we are not sure what he means, we just muddle along and try to do both faith and works to the best of our imperfect ability. Or give up and do neither. I've certainly seen that as well. 2
3DOP Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 (edited) seed, hi. I am glad you bring this up. The Catholic Tradition holds that although Christ paid the eternal punishment for our sins, we must still make amends for what we call the temporal punishment for sins. Acts of charity, which are only possible with grace, is what makes amends, covering a multitude of sins. This is how we "fill up" that which is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. Charity is always willing to die, to be crucified with Christ. Every act of charity is in some way a renunciation of self in favor of God or your neighbor. As Christ renounced self for us, so He calls us to join Him in renouncing ourselves for others, as little Christs and to atone for the rest of the punishment for sin that is still due. Although our sufferings cannot merit heaven for anyone, they can in a very real sense be offered up, to be "traded" if you will for what remains to be suffered by ourselves or others. This is what makes St. Paul make remarkable comments about how sufferings make him happy. To be a saint is to be something that befuddles the world. They can't make sense of how suffering makes the saint have joy. Notice how there is something in the sufferings of Christ that are said to be wanting. The Catholic Church teaches that He left some suffering for His Church to perform. "Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the church:" (Col. 1:24) Edited May 7, 2014 by 3DOP 1

Maybe there is something in other scripture or tradition that further explains, or maybe this is simply one of those parts that is wrong.Charity is the pure love of Christ. It puts others needs ahead of our own needs. Pride (selfishness) is putting our own will ahead of God's will for us. All sin is essentially selfishness Christ never did anything to please himself, only to please his father. Sin is selfishness, being like Christ is the opposite of selfishness. 1
