My point in all this is how the men now dress: business suits and white shirts and ties. Should women also have a more conservative code of dress too if they get the priesthood? And if not...should men then give up on the suit and white tie as a sunday standard? I don't wear a suit and white tie to church. I like a more casual dress..usually khakis and a casual shirt. I feel more comfortable and it is more convenient for me since I tend to do things after church but then I am not active in church either. I don't exercise my priesthood, pay tithing, or have callings. So, I am not turning heads with my dress. My own take on it is that if women can still have their dress code that they now have if they get the priesthood men should be more free in their style of dress too if both have the priesthood. why me Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Will newly priesthood-enabled women help with all those fun elders quorum moves? http://buzz.io/4219/some-lds-women-want-the-priesthood-well-lds-men-have-some-requests-too/ I have no idea why men need to wear white shirts and ties to church, especially if women tend to be able to wear a variety of colors. Thinking about the the day when women were called on to wear pants as a sign of liberation. I would love see a men's movement in church that attempts to discard the suit, the white shirt, and tie. And if women ever got the priesthood and did not have to wear a white blouse, I think that men would have a wonderful reason to discard the suit and white shirt and wear what they wish to wear on sunday and yet, still be respectful. why me Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Why are you so actively involved in commentary on this stuff if you are not active. This especially strange based on your criticism of the OW movement having inactive and non-members commenting and participating. As for me, I don't wear a white shirt or suit. Haven't in years. I still exercise my priesthood and have a calling attend the temple etc.And I think that that is wonderful. However, men and women do feel pressured to dress a certain way. Very few men have abandoned the white shirt and tie. Likewise, women can also wear pants to church but most choose not to. Would it be possible for a bishop to disregard the white shirt, suit and tie. I haven't seen it happen yet. My point is that the church is rather traditional stuck in the past with its dress code. It was fine in the 50s and even in the 60s. But now if most of the men are wearing white shirts and ties, it can seem cultish to outsiders. My point is simple: if women receive the priesthood and they don't need to wear a white blouse, men should also be able to disregard the white shirt and suit as a cultural tradition. And the general authorities too. Why wear white shirts if future women GAs can dress in multiple of colors? Females receiving the priesthood could break many of the traditional cultural traditions found in the church, especially in dress code. The church is an organization of 13 million people. Having worked for one of the largest corporations in the world myself in a marketing role, I understand how hard it is to get millions of people to uniformly and effectively represent a quality brand. Asking 13 million people to dress similarly is an obvious way to create a unified front. It's low-hanging fruit in the effort to create "a people," a culture that adheres to itself and thereby effectively attains its loftier goals. I sympathize with the effort to create physical representations of our spiritual unification. It is a struggle for all of us -- those who are leaders of the organization and those who are not -- to journey to spiritual transcendence within the physical paradigm of our bodily tools.I also sympathize with the desire to increase the reverence in our worship services by lending them formality through our clothing. People act differently when they're wearing jeans than when they're wearing something that took a little thought and perhaps even a little money. Absolutely. But there are many fronts on which we could attack the reverence issue among our people: instead of picking on people's clothing -- a measure so subjective to condition, place, and personality -- we could instead insist on a culture in which we sing our hymns with greater enthusiasm, we limit our trips in and out of the chapel during Sacrament meeting, and we strive not to fall asleep during talks. A person who falls asleep is not respecting the spirit of the meeting, even if she is wearing haute couture http://www.patheos.com/Resources/Additional-Resources/Mormon-Culture-vs-Mormon-Doctrine.html Not a bad take on it. It took me three months to get past that when the missonaries were coming over. I do not think it helps people's knee jerk reactions to us. I know we say it look professional and that it gives a good first impression. Well yes, the suit and tie look clean and professional. It's the fact that they can't get out of them, that gives off anohter first impression.

Storm Rider Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) I think dress code is the least of concerns when it comes to holding/honoring the priesthood. What I would really like to know prior to this happening is for the OW group define what is being a man. Is there a difference between manhood and womanhood? Is there anything that a man should do different from a woman? Edited April 5, 2014 by Storm Rider
why me Posted April 5, 2014 Author Posted April 5, 2014 If they get the Priesthood, will the Relief Society be done away with?Yes. I think that since the OW movement are feminists who are critical of patriarchy, relief society would need to be done away with. All are equal and as such, all will be in the same meeting. Likewise for visiting teaching and young men's and young women's. Since all females will have the priesthood as they come of age, no reason for separation.
CMZ Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) First: we moved today. Two sisters joined the group helping.Second: Since when is priesthood required to move a wardrobe?"By the power of the Melchizedek priesthood I move this piano to the living room..." Lesson in logic (with all due respect): I didn't say that sisters never help with moves. I also didn't say that possession of the Priesthood is required to help with moves. But the elders quorum does tend to get stuck with helping people move. So.... if women are ordained to the priesthood and become elders are they going to be fine being assigned that duty in contrast with the frequency they may have been asked before holding the Priesthood? seed Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Inactive people should have no voice? That is a really itresting question. Anyone can make a login... It seems if LDS managment doesnt want Inactive or Non member included that they should have a stronger screening process on the accounts.... But I have misunderstood the question.
strappinglad Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Well, men had better brush up on their casserol and bread making skills. And I expect Elders to have table cloths and flowers on the table. 3
