In the Book of Revelation 20:12 it says "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works."

 

So, let's say some who wasn't a member of the Church here lives and dies and lived a reasonably good life. So, they accept the Gospel in the next life how would they be judged according to their works if their works were done prior to their baptism, if their works included their baptism then hopefully repentance and baptism washes away their sins and junk, so why judge someone on their life before they got baptized? If their works included the totality of their earthly experience then what good is their baptism in the next life?

Baptism does not place someone in the permanent wash cycle; it washes away the sins up to that point. We are judged according to the degree of truth that we have been given in mortal life and how we have lived that truth.

 

All will be judged. We cannot escape that event. It is for this reason all must repent....constantly. It is one of the purposes of preparing for the Sacrament each week.  If we partake of the Sacrament worthily we are forgiven of all our sins and we begin anew in striving to be perfect as our Father is perfect. 

 

The beauty of Christ's atonement is that even in our failure we are forgiven; we must be willing to follow, willing to be a disciple. This is not personal perfection, but taking on His perfection.

If their names are written in the book of life (Alma 5:58), they needn't worry about what they did before their spiritual rebirth. Their sins are blotted out (Alma 7:13).

God is the only one whom knows what we would have become if we were allowed to tarry in this life.

In the end no one will be judged by what ifs. All will be judged on their works of salvation- whether they have attended to them or not. There will be none who are judged in the end on what they would have become had they been allowed this or that. It all comes down to "actual" works and accepting those works.
