So I don't live in Utah, but a friend on facebook posted a link to this

Perhaps I'm late to the party, but it appears from the comments on this, and EVERY other article I've EVER read on sltrib.com (which admittedly aren't many), that the Trib is the gathering place to bash the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Apparently there is no law, no problem, no controversy in Utah, that isn't the fault of the Church.  Am I off the mark?

You are not off the mark.  The SLTrib bills itself as an organization that stands up to the Church, represent the interests of non members, and feels itself duty bound to aggressively criticize and go after it.

"I have not seen the lawsuit, but Utah’s appellate courts have repeatedly upheld the constitutionality of the Utah Adoption Act," said David Hardy, who is not a party to the lawsuit and has not yet reviewed it, though he was involved in some of the cases referenced in it. "I don’t have any reason to believe there is a basis to overturn the act."

If the lawsuit is accurate, hopefully it will be changed.

The article itself did not refer to the Church that I saw.

There are lots of gathering places to knock the Church on the Internet. It seems to be a major source of entertainment for some people. Given that DN censors comments more, it is hardly surprising to me that the website of the other major paper in the state draws that kind of comment.

No, it's not your imagination.  I am a devout Latter-day Saint, but I do believe that The Salt Lake Tribune plays a needed role in Utah.  It's a point of pride for me that "little old Salt Lake City" is a two-newspaper town.  Many cities which are far larger cannot boast of that distinction.  Yes, I often disagree with The Tribune's take on things having to do with the Church of Jesus Christ, and I certainly don't agree with the venom spewed forth by detractors of the Church in on line comments at its site.  And yes, some (perhaps many) people who post comments on that site do suffer from a pathological case of tunnel vision which causes them to conclude that everything negative that happens in the state is traceable, in one way or another, to the Church.  They also seem to have an unnatural ability and tendency to "spin" a story on nearly any subject to attempt to cast the Church in a negative light. It does grow tiresome, and I do limit my time there because of it.

I read both SLC newspapers, the Trib and Des News. Each covers things the other does not. If we had just one or the other, news in Utah would be unbalanced. For example Deseret News has nothing on these lawsuits, while,the SL Trib has done several stories about fathers over the last year or so, who are trying to get their kids back. ALL who have never lived in Utah and the mothers are not from Utah, and only came here in order to give their kid up for adoption without the father being notified.

I read this article yesterday, and am glad to see that someone is calling Utah on our adoption laws. There is no good that comes from fraudulently turning a child over to a stranger when their own parent wants them. Utah has a real problem here.

SLTRIB is a proudly biased anti-Mormon rag.  The only thing worse than the articles themselves are the commenters.  There's several dozen or so trolls that post numerous replies each to every single article that appears.  It's like they have no jobs and just sit around trolling the comments all day long.  And if you try to actually engage them, chances are, an admin will delete you and ban you citing some nonexistent use policy that you supposedly violated.  It is a personal attack to disagree with an anti-Mormon.  You'll get a more balanced perspective from the Huffington Post or Daily Kos, strangely.

I did not meet my birth father until I was 27 and instead spent years being tormented by a mad man. Yes, that law sucks.

I share your distaste for comments that appear on SLTrib.com, and, as I said, I often disagree with Trib reporters' and commentators about their coverage and opinions of "things LDS."  But it's a gross oversimplification to dismiss the Trib as "a proudly biased anti-Mormon rag."  I'm sure the Trib has LDS staffers, many/most of whom qualify for Temple Recommends, and can answer the question, "Do you support, affiliate with, or sympathize with any group whose teachings are not in harmony with the teachings of the Church?" honestly in the negative, their association with the Trib notwithstanding.
