I've never understood why this is a point of contention. Haven't we been told that one of the reasons for polygamy is to "raise up seed.". While we don't know for sure if Joseph had any offspring from his polygamous relationships, we do know with 100% certainly that there were countless offspring from other polygamous marriages. Obviously sexual relations were sanctioned for plural marriages.

Most likely. However, the critics are praying for a child not to prove the idea of polygamy as raising righteous seed but to show that joseph was a horny rabbit. Much better not to find a child of his by a polygamous relationship at that time.

That is what I thought you meant. What the critics fail to acknowledge is the destruction of the mormon presses in missouri as an example of what happened in nauvoo. I am sure that the destruction of mormon property was on the mind of the town council when they decided the fate of the expositor.

 

Of course it was.  There is evidence they even had city counsel research the issue of nuisance abatement, and he looked into Blackstone to find legal authority, and found what he viewed as good authority for the procedure:  Find nuisance, order abatement, and if it turns out the city was wrong (as determined by court in later claims proceeding), pay for the "taking."  The US Vth Amendment assumes the state's right to "take" others' property by eminent domain and other proceedings, including nuisance abatement proceedings.  It was a later development that courts had to be involved before the civil abatement could happen.

Well, my dad always use to say he found my siblings and I under a rock, so I guess you can use that if it makes you feel better. And I've read that Silvia was no longer with her husband at the time, so that should put this to rest somewhat. That is, if we're worried he had children within the polyandry unions.
