Amen to that! I believe the same. The Church should stay focused on the Lamanite to bring to pass the prophecies of the BofM.

No they just decided to wander in a more prestigious woods.

It makes you wonder who is at the helm and who is guiding them.

The Church took aim at the international scene after Pres. Benson ascended, the Native Americans were so 1960....

...and here's how! Through the Lamanites, if one wishes to call them that.

"Living Legends has performed throughout the United States and in more than 45 foreign countries. Featured on national TV in China, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, it represented the United States at the 1992 World's Fair in Seville, Spain and at the 1991 German-American Volksfest in Berlin."

There is mention of this group in BYU Magazine this month as well: http://magazine.byu.edu/?act=view&a=3214

Also, the Polynesian Cultural Center isn't chopped liver, and neither is BYU-Hawaii, both having a key role in promoting the interests of the descendants of Book of Mormon people, including bringing their influence to bear as East and West are brought together through these vehicles.

If President Benson is to be credited for bringing the "Lamanite" power and influence to bear upon the rest of the world, he was more forward-thinking than his 1950's caricature would lead one to beleive.

So you believe that President Benson amped up the Lamanite influence making it international? Interesting. I was of the impression that the Polynesian Center predated him by several administrations, but you suggest it was something he strongly supported?

To run those programs now would raise the ire of the politically correct crowd. All kinds of accusations of racism and ethnic inferiority would deflect any good done. Better to have ended them early.

Your post indicated that you might have suggested as much. You said, "The Church took aim at the international scene after Pres. Benson ascended, the Native Americans were so 1960...."

In reply I said, "If President Benson is to be credited for bringing the "Lamanite" power and influence to bear upon the rest of the world, he was more forward-thinking than his 1950's caricature would lead one to beleive."

We can see that their culture is helpful as a global emissary for the Church, both in terms of meeting the public and bringing students from the Pacific Rim, Oceania, Asia etc. to BYU-H. This might not have been intuitively obvious to the casual observer in the 1950s-60s, an era for which President Benson is often mocked as a poster boy, but he was active and influential into the 90s, a time when the Church was expanding its reach globally.

As far as what I beleive? President Benson was the Lord's servant and whatever he did that migth have contributed to the advancement of the descendants of Book of Mormon peoples in having a role in the global gathering is just fine with me! Now did the Church's global reach create a ceratin receptivity for the Lamanites, or did the Lord bless them as a result of 150 years of Restoration with the wherewithal to go out and testify to the world with power, or are both part of the same dynamic? Each President builds on the previous adminstrations' advancements.

Probably. And it seems that the Lamanites have switched roles: bringing the Gentiles into the fold.
