Not to put too fine a point on it, but isn't that exactly what differentiates religion from properly evaluated science.

But who is to say who is properly evaluating science? Is it the atheist scientist who disavows the existence of any supreme being, or the religious scientist who sees the hand of God in science?

Nope. Contrary to protestations of neutrality those who practice the scientific disciplines use exactly the same process. Each must make sense of the scriptures information input in his own way.
