Gohan Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Question. What alternative options might there be for him to still serve as a [local] missionary in some capacity? There was a similar occurrence with a local young man in the mission I served in, he was able to be called to serve locally as an office elder working with mission vehicles. He served in our mission office for two years, and loved it. A similar call in his area might be possible.
Tacenda Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 My sweet nephew served in Florida and was really transformed through his service. He was serving some very poor people and homeless families. He apparently was riding his bike everywhere and possibly rode some strenuous rides. He started having terribly muscle spasms in his back. After excruciating pain he was sent home recently to get specialized medical help. After much testing it was found and doctor verified that his bike riding was the cause. He still suffers but is getting therapy. I think it has affected him pyschologically because he was involved in helping so many and is wondering why this has happened. He longs to go back but it's not looking like that will happen yet.Personally I relate in a small way, with the anxiety. Lately I've been unable to drive under various conditions. Either the highway or when driving with my grandkids. I'll experience panic attacks that will cause my heart to race, my hands to sweat and I become immobolized. It's a very difficult emotion and for me is all brought on with my mind. The minute I start to think about something bad happening on the road I start with thoughts and it seizes me. I'm only 51 and don't want to quit driving.I wish your nephew the best outcome and think and hope that there may be a better thing to come.
brainburn Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I remember a friend of mine was rumored to have quit his mission early due to thoughts about riding his bike into a moving car to get sent home. This reminds me of an even deeper memory of my younger brother having a melt-down during a tithing settlement after the Bishop simply asked if he felt my brother had payed a full tithe. You can guess as to whether he had, if it's not already obvious... but he must have only been 10 or 11 years old.
cursor Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 My nephew just emailed me back with,Hey Curt, I was able to read through the comments you sent me from the forum. I want to tell you how helpful it was, and that I really appreciate you setting it up for me. I intend to reflect on it often.
Gillebre Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 Glad that your nephew was able to benefit from the suggestions of others. He needs to know he hasn't failed anything, and that the Lord is with him.

gurn Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 This hits very close to home. Two years ago my son had the same experience. He was sent home after 12 days. We live in the mid-west and there wasn’t anything at the time in way of a service mission. After two years and medical assistance he got permission to try it again. He did fine for three months and then ran into some problems that brought the anxiety back with a vengeance. He returned home after 4 months. This has been a very hard experience for him. Our stake president talked to Salt Lake and they told my son that he needed to just move on. That is easy to say, but my son felt like a failure. Just moving on wasn’t an option this time. I had several difficult conversations with my stake president and had to push to get something going. My son starts tomorrow serving at a bishop’s storehouse, He’ll work three days a week there, and the other days he’ll do family history work. We’ll have to pick up the cost of housing him in the area of the storehouse and he can drive home Wednesday evening. The cost of service will run higher than the $400 a month full time mission. Fortunately, I’m able to cover these costs. We’ve been extremely disappointed in Salt Lake. He felt that he was just cast aside. I really had to push to get something worked out. Salt Lake can, and should do better for these young people. We’ll keep your family in our prayers.
