The Temple on Mount Zion

Saturday, 22 September, 2012, 9:15 am – 5:30 pm

We would like to announce a forthcoming conference, “The Temple on Mount Zion” to be held at the Provo Public Library on 22 September, 2012. This conference was originally organized by Matthew Brown before his untimely passing. The conference focuses on LDS conceptions of ancient and modern Temple theology as reflected in the Bible and LDS scripture. We are attaching a program listing the participants and the time for their presentations, along with abstracts for each paper.

Admission to the conference is free, but seating is limited to about 300. During the lunch hour you can bring a bag lunch to eat in conference room, or visit some of the restaurants around Center St. and University Ave, a few blocks south of the library. The underground garage at the library is available for parking, but cars must be out at 6 pm.

What a splendid day-long symposium and an appropriate tribute to the memory of Matthew Brown, energetic and prolific scholar that he was.

With this program and the other ventures that have already been launched, it is clear that Interpreter: a Journal of Moromon Studies is not just carrying on the legacy of the old FARMS, but has already built on it substantially.

Kudos to Bill Hamblin and the other organizers. And my thanks to Bryce Haymond and associated techies who made it possible for me to enjoy the seminar in the comfort of my home.

Ancient sacred vestments: scriptural symbols and meanings

Vestments in Old Testament

Robe, linen clothing (code word for sacred vestments).

Symbols on vestments point towards Christ

  1. The investiture of special vestments signifies one of the gestures of approach.

Those who

Gestures of Approach prepare the individual for entrance into the holy

-removal of profane items (remove shoes)

Ritual aboltions or washing of water ex 40:12

Anoint olive oil ex 40:13

Investiture of holy garments ex 40:13

Filling the hand LDS BD 753

Offering sacrifices at the altar Lev 1-7

Table of Shewbread

Offering incense at the golden altar

Entering the veil

2. Putting on sacred vestments is related to putting on Christ and his holiness.

Lev 6:10, Gal 3:27, Eph. 4:24

Endow literally means to get dressed or put on clothing rom 13:14

3 sacred vestments are associated with salvation glory strength and righteousness.

“clothe yourself with Strength” Isa 52:1

Moses 7:3 clothed upon with glory

Ex 28:2, Ps 132:9, Ps 132:16

4 sacred vestments and clothing sometimes symbolizes the person who wears them.

“Keep your garments spotless” Alma means to keep yourself clean Alma 5:21

3 Nephi 27- washed clean in the blood of Christ

5When priestly officiants wear sacred vestments, they emulate celestial persons- God, Angles, and redeemed souls- who wear sacred vestments

Rev 1:13 Daniel 10

7 angels who come out of heaven with the plagues will be clothed similarly to Christ in Rev 1

Wilford Woodruff was accosted by evil spirits. 3 heavenly messengers appeared in Temple Clothing and rebuked the evil spirits.

6 Sacred vestments anticipate the resurrection, when mortals will be clothed with an immortal body.

1 Cor 15:53-54

Nephi used the word clothed, together with the word rob in context of resurrection 2 Nephi 9:13-14, D/C 138:43

7- sacred vestments point to Jesus Christ

-ephods material- made of wool and linen of fine workmanship similar to the veil. Fabric contains gold as a predominant ingredient

-ephods color-blue purple, scarlet yarn with gold twined in. Same as veil. Gold=incorruption,

-urim and thummim- bore 12 stones, lights and perfections, magnifying JC who reveals light and perfection

-bearing the stones with names-2 stones on shoulder, all hade names of 12 tribes. HP represented JC, symbolically carried 12 tribes into holy of holies

-the high priest- JC called high priest. HP sacrificed animals, JC offered himself. HP represented world before God, JC same. JC was separate from sinners.
