Harry Reid To Vote For Gay Marriage

I read today that Harry Reid will support and vote for a gay marriage amendment in his home state of Nevada.  Isn't this grounds for his Temple Recommend to be revoked?  If not, can anyone explain why not?

I thought that the gay marriage amendments were affirming that marriage is between one man and one woman... at least the 32 states that enacted such amendments held that position... Is Nevada taking a different position?

Nevada already has a constitutional ban. Harry Reid said he would vote for gay marraige. However his stance is that he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman but that the state has no say in the matter. No I dont think he should have his recomend taken away. On what grounds should it be revoked?

The worthiness for a temple recommend is based on the answers to specific questions during the interview. So, the answer to your question depends on his answers to those questions.

I might add that it appears that his thinking on SS marriage has evolved over the years, and perhaps he will change his mind on issues regarding the church as well. He may find it increasingly difficult to resolve the differences between his religious and political beliefs.

We are in no position to judge him and can only wish him well.

I've never heard of anybody getting their temple recommend revoked for supporting marriage equality. If that were the case, I know several active, temple-going Mormons who voted No on Proposition 8 in California, who wouldn't be riding on the temple bus.

Nor for supporting immorality and dishonestly calling it "marriage equality."

Anyways..can't really say for sure. We don't know his heart or his intentions. It's not our place to judge. I'm still working on that one, personally.

"My personal belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman. But in a civil society, I believe that people should be able to marry whomever they want, and it’s no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married," Reid said.

On Thursday, reporters asked Reid if he would vote to legalize same sex marriage if it was on the ballot in Nevada and he nodded yes, even though he previously voted for the state’s constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Personally I don't give two spits for Reid, I am a social and generally fiscal SBC conservative. The guy is a politician and in a way I think that is a relgion unto itself. (sorry don't want to derail... just my two)

Bold mine, I think in his statement about a civil society, he put some distance between his own beliefs and the government.

But, he hung himself, underline mine, when he nodded that he would support it though. In general I think it's a bit of grandstanding to shift the focus off a really cruddy economy onto something that polarizes folks. Maybe Nevadans will put him back in again for that.. dunno the demographics. I imagine many LDS will be a bit disappointed that their strongest political member doesn't line up with their views.

This is absolutely a no brainer for those with the least of common sense.  If Mr Reid comes out and admits he would VOTE FOR GAY MARRIAGE, how can we, as a Church, allow him to hold a temple recommend?  This is a blatant violation of our requirements in addressing the TR questions.  Why do we allow our foundation to be weakened with this type of tolerance?  Does the size of his tithe give him a pass?  I think so!

I'd be curious to know if he actually has one though?

I'd be curious to know when the last time he did Temple work actually was?

I dunno much about his involvement with his faith. I would be surprised if he was very active that way.

Of all the questions asked in a temple recommend interview the one I think one should consider very carefully(perhaps most carefully) is "Do you think you are worthy in every way to attend the temple?". The answer that gets you into the temple is obvious but IMNSHO if you give an affirmative answer and you are not then it is like taking the sacrament unworthily. You eat and drink or in the case of the temple attend damnation to your soul. One may attend the temple by giving all the right answers and still not be worthy. However that is an issue between god and the attendee. My opinion of Harry Reid is not to flattering but if I should find myself in a temple session with him it would not affect me one bit because my job in the temple is to work on my own sanctification. Brother Reid is there to work on his and we are both dependent on Jesus Christ if we are to attain any measure of success in that area.
