LDSToronto Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 This is what you said:As a believer, I was turned off by the 'logic' and arguments that other believers used, and I was really turned off by the behaviour of some who call themselves LDS on this board. As a result, I went elsewhere to find answers, and the void was filled, and I left the church.H.Clearly you went to the opposite side, because you didn't like what the "believers" said. Thus you went to anti-mormonism for answers. Please go back to the OP - the context of this discussion revolves around 'the board'. I went to 'other sources', that is, I ventured beyond 'this board'. Not all sources beyond the boundary of this board are anti-Mormon. For instance, I read stuff from FAIR, The Maxwell Institute, well-known apologetic writers. I read stuff from General Authorities. I don't suspect you would call them anti-Mormon, or perverted, would you? Thus, as I asked, why do you go to those who pervert mormonism and then expect to find "good and truth" there?Do General Authorities, FAIR, and The Maxwell Institute pervert Mormonism? Because I went to those sources.Do you go to Fanatical Islam to learn the "truth" about Jews, Christians, and America?Seriously? This is a silly analogy, and frankly, offensive. Why do you go to the bigots of Mormonism for the "truth"?Please provide a list of the bigots of Mormonism. If I've read any of their stuff, I'll answer this question. What good, light and truth do anti-mormons give the world? They have families, provide for them, donate money to good causes, love their kids and grandkids, have jobs, build stuff, save lives, serve in the military, sacrifice their lives for their countries....should I go on?H.
KevinG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I could find verses in the Bible that drove me from Christianity if I were so inclined. The last time I checked the truth resided with God.
KevinG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 The bragging about being polite while criticizing others reminds me of a great line by the witch in Soundheim's "Into The Woods". You're so nice. You're not good,You're not bad,You're just nice.I'm not good,I'm not nice,I'm just right. (The Last Midnight)

I asked if you'd prefer I was rude. You alluded to the fact that I might have been rude. I asked for examples. I don't see any bragging here.H.
KevinG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Are you not a believer?I am a believer... I just know that its not that hard to find "evidence" to justify our own prejudices - no matter the source. 2

Just when I started to think I was beginning to learn about folks around the board here and their beliefs...like who's who around here :-) Edited March 26, 2012 by followerofemmanuel

KevinG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Were you talking about me?Not specifically. I was making an observation about the irony of those who criticize others and then lecture them when they receive a less than tempered response. But if the shoe fits...
KevinG Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 Ah, then my apologies. If it helps you are a subset of those people who question the politeness of those who counter your criticism. You can now be offended without needing to apologize to me.
Damien the Leper Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 I think that every story counts. No story of sincere faith, sincere doubt or loss of faith is diminished in importance.

You can now be offended without needing to apologize to me.No, there is no questioning that JeffK and Pahoran are impolite in their responses to me. This isn't a complaint, just an observation. I've also never taken offense. If that's what those guys wish to add to the google caches, heck, be my guest.H.
KevinG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Observations made for the benefit of an audience are not neutral.
LDSToronto Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Observations made for the benefit of an audience are not neutral.I don't understand.H.
KevinG Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I don't understand.H.My observation is that your protestations lack of understanding is not surprising.
LDSToronto Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 My observation is that your protestations lack of understanding is not surprising.Huh? Seriously, this is hard to parse, let alone comprehend.H.
selek1 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I don't understand.H.If you're throwing out sneers, bombs, and insults to entertain the watchers from (and collect high-fives from) the denizens of the Shady Rest, then you're not neutral- and you're a demagogue and a hustler.Rather than engaging in serious, substantive, thinking discourse, you're merely "playing to the crowd".This is a technique Bill Maher, Jerry Springer, and others have perfected.Rather than offering serious, thoughtful analysis, dialogue, or even criticism, he and his ilk are far more interested in entertaining the unwashed and unthinking rabble who constitute their target audience. 1

Jeff K. Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 But of course speaking generally and being polite, we speak of those anti Mormons who post here regularly, it is what they do. They will continue to troll, they have never really left the church, they can't. They can't leave it alone, it consumes so much of their time. They are obsessed with it. Now as they troll they will lie, just as they do in real life. So politeness is lost on them. They are past feeling any shame for their actions. The veneer of politeness they struggle to maintain is just that, a veneer, and it covers the anguish and hate they have for the church.Shrug, it is silly to be polite to a mad frothing dog, even as it wags its tail.
Makarios Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I started off as a committed Evangelical Christian, but after several years of debating some very educated Mormons on this board I realized my position wasn't much more defensible than theirs. Now I'm an atheist. There was more to my de-conversion than just discussions here, but this is where my journey of doubt began.
Calm Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 (edited) That is unfortunate that doubt led for you to total disbelief. Edited March 27, 2012 by calmoriah
