The "Church Of Jesus Christ" And Beckinites?

So today I was at my office when the missionaries stopped by to get their regular meal from me. I was in the waiting room just chit chatting with a client's dad, and when they left, the father (whom I've known for years in a professional capacity) told me that he goes to a church that accepts the book of Mormon, and it's called The Church of Jesus Christ. I did a half hearted search on the internet about it, but haven't really found anything. We only had a minute to talk, but he said something about "beckinites" sp?? and a diversion from the Mormon church??? I didn't find anything on them either. At some point I can probably ask him more about it, but it isn't appropriate while I'm working with the family. So do any of you know what he's talking about?

I think the church's claim to fame is that Alice Cooper grew up as a member.

Although apparently he was never baptized as a member (according to Wikipedia, anyway).

I saw that about Alice Cooper as well. At some point I'm sure the moment will arise where this person and myself can have a conversation about this religion. It befuddles me that you can use the Bible, and the BoM and not be lds.

There are a few denominations that believe in the BOM but are not part of the LDS church. I know we have a poster here (bookofmormonluvr or something like that) that belongs to such a church, but i don't remember the exact name of it.

Many are polygamous but others deny that JS ever practiced polygamy.

I find that so interesting. This gentleman didn't say, but I'm assuming they don't use the Pearl of Great Price or D&C - which again befuddles me if you believe in Joseph Smith as a prophet. I wonder how people get around the fact that JS practiced polygamy? I'd love to hear from people like BookofMormonLuvr about such things…

I believe the Community of Christ (previously known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) has its own version of the D&C.

Not only did Alice grow up a member, his grandfather was their church President for a few years.

For those of us who do believe in the Book of Mormon and Bible, it befuddles us how you can believe in both and be LDS. I guess we are all equally befuddled. ^_^

I attend a RLDS Restoration Branch.

The Church of Jesus Christ being discussed ONLY accepts- as scripture- the Bible (KJV) and the Book of Mormon (of which they have a lovely edition that uses the same chapter and verse system as the LDS edition). They do not accept the D&C, Book of Commandments, or any variation thereof.

As to why we (traditional RLDS) do not accept that Joseph taught or practiced polygamy- the best thing I can do is refer you to this...

**BTW, I am in no way, whatsoever, interested in a discussion about polygamy.**

Our D&C pretty much resembles your own, the Sections are numbered somewhat different, and we have revelations given by JS successors in office up to, and including, Israel A. Smith. There are some sections you have they we don't have also (132 as an example, and the "Official Declarations")

Touche. I'm not interested in a polygamy discussion either. I'm wondering though, if you can share a few of the reasons you made the switch from LDS to RLDS?

Long story short... some of the more unqiue conepts of the LDS church didn't line up with what I saw in the Bible and Book of Mormon which were given to "confound false doctrine"..

Problems:

Polygamy

Priesthood Ban

"As man is God once was..."

The Endowment Ceremony/Sealing

Presidential Inerrancy

Also:

Revelations given to men that JSIII would take his father's place- which came to pass several years after said revelations were received.

How the current apostacy of RLDS (now Community of Christ) leadership fits into prophecy concerning the Last Days.

Whisperings of the Spirit that this is where I am to serve.

Sidenote:

I am much more open-minded to the idea of baptismal authority residing in several of the churches of the Restoration, and await the day when we can come together and build Zion, the New Jerusalem. When the One Mighty and Strong comes and Jesus reigns in the midst of His people before His coming in glory, all issues of doctrine and authority will be fully resolved. Then we will have a house (church) fitly put together, ready to receive Him at his coming.

if Heavenly Father and Jesus had learned anything at all about Jesus' failure to hold the church together, they would have explained to Joseph Smith how important it is to hold the flock together after the passing of the founding prophet, and how exactly chain of command is to maintained.

because Brigham Young had to campaign by riding Joseph Smith's horse through town convincing people to vote for the best JS replace we clearly see that a repeat of Jesus' failure to hold the church together was very close to day-ja-vue.

I don't know any member of the church who believes that the apostasy was a failure on Jesus's part.
