I gave contributors the ability to start threads in the focused discussion area. Once a topic is created please notify me so I can make the op a moderator for that thread. If it is approved the topic and moderator will be in place. If not the thread will be moved to general discussion and the op can still close it at will.

So, how does one reach the status of "contributor"? Is it dependent upon the number of posts, or is it a conferred status?

3000 posts or I can change you. You've been around enough so I will mod your post count.

I'm just curious as to why 3000 posts would be the threshold to start threads in the focused discussion area. That's an awful lot of posts.

Most of the posters I'd most want to read in the focused discussion area tend not to be all that prolific (and the inverse holds true as well). Brant Gardner, for example, has been on the board for over 8 years and still has less than 3000 posts.

Now I realize that Brant and other former "pundits" have evidently received honorary "contributor" status, but there are other worthies that have not (e.g, JGreen, Robert F. Smith, Jeremy Orbe-Smith).

The "3000 rule" excludes some of the board's best and brightest, while opening yet another forum to high-volume, low-substance posting that is unfortunately characteristic of the General Discussions forum.

There are always exceptions and the group can easily be changed to accomadate special circumstances. All one has to do is ask. Why 3000? Well we figured at that point the poster should be accepted by the community and has shown knowledge of board rules and guidelines to start threads that they can control.
