In this interview, Bill Maher talks about Romney and says that Jesus is inferior to Joseph Smith in the Mormon religion. He makes this comment about four minutes into the video.

This is of course ridiculous, but do Mormons place too much emphasis on Smith and give people the wrong idea?

Is there anything more that we could do to help people realize the truth about our belief in Jesus Christ.?

No we don't and it's others who don't take the time to understand and accurately represent the quote in question vis a vis the Bible who give people the wrong idea.

One Bible verse alone will blow all criticism along these lines out of the water:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

John 14:12

Mr. Maher of course has an axe to grind against all religions, and the LDS are a convenient and easy target. Especially given that the host Mr. Dison brought up the subject of Mr. Romney's religion, as if that had anything to do with being a competent President of the US. I doubt that the fact that we've had two Quaker Presidents(not that there is anything wrong with being a Quaker) doesn't seem to get much airplay in The Media.

Given the level of ignorance about the LDS, and the Bible itself amoungst the US population. I am not hopeful for a LDS President anytime soon. But politics is a strange animal. So who knows for sure.

Or the fact that we've had at least 3 KKK members as Presidents.

It is a shame that Romney's religion is a huge barrier for him. I think he's a brilliant man and would make a great president.

People like Maher, like so many of his ilk, are wholly confident in their ignorance. They place great confidence in positions they have never understood.

Given the issue, that is not the verse I would use to prove that LDS do not hold JS higher than Jesus. I would look to the more mundane; the name of the Church, quote Joseph on Christ, etc.

I don't think we have anything more to do. Maher is hardly someone that is going to motivate me to cross the street, much less the manner in which we preach of Jesus Christ.

I've always found that it is rather disingenuous for someone else to tell me what I believe.

Ps. I have my personal reservations about Mr. Romney as President, but his religion really is none of anyone else's business. I would have hoped that President Kennedy would have put that type of nonsense out of its misery a long time ago.
