rodheadlee Posted June 13, 2011 Posted June 13, 2011 We bought our new boat in Annapolis and this October we will be heading back to the Pacific Ocean, which we consider home. The last time we sailed through Mexico I regret not being able to stop and see some ruins. We may sail along the east coast of Mexico and Central America if time and finances allow. We could stop in Isla Mujeres, MX, Belize and Guatemala before making our way to the Panama Canal. If you could visit Aztec/Mayan/Olmec or any other ruins which ones would you pick to see? It would be best if they were within a days bus ride from the coast. We have a cat to care for and we don't like to leave the boat for more than a day at a time in a new port.

Thanks, I've had my head buried in the bilge and I haven't had a chance to google any of the sites yet. We bought a fixer upper, we'll be doing good to get out on time. If we're too late we'll be stuck here for the winter I hate cold weather.I guess Tikal is accessible from the Rio Dulce in Guatemala or Belieze City.

We have a cat to care for and we don't like to leave the boat for more than a day at a time in a new port.I've visited Chichen Itza and it is truly awe-inspiring (though that was back when they let visitors climb the ancient pyramids.....I've since heard that this is no longer allowed).We rented a car in Cancun, and it was about a 3-hour drive to the site (with a few stops for military check-points....don't know if these still exist).I would highly recommend a trip to these ruins if you have the chance.
