Mark Beesley Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 One of the Prophets, forget which one, said something to the effect that "I'm preparing as though it were tomorrow, but I'm still planting cherry trees."In a general conference address in April 1950, Elder Richard L. Evans of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said: “I recall a reported statement, attributed, as I remember it, to President Wilford Woodruff. Some of the brethren of his time are said to have approached him … and to have inquired of him as to when he felt the end would be—when would be the coming of the Master? These, I think, are not his exact words, but they convey the spirit of his reported reply: ‘I would live as if it were to be tomorrow—but I am still planting cherry trees!’http://lds.org/ldsor...0004d82620aRCRD
chowchow9000 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I personally look forward to the end of the world and the death and destruction that will accompany it. After all, Jesus taught us that he loves all mankind -- but he is still going to burn the hell out of all the sinners. Go Jesus !!!!!
Hestia Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 chow chow is taking a 3 day break to have time to read the board guidelines.
SeattleGrunge Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Although this quote is from BRM, I do give it pretty significant weight IMHO...“The time for the Second Coming of Christ is as fixed and certain as was the hour of his birth. It will not vary as much as a single second from the divine decree. He will come at the appointed time. The Millennium will not be ushered in prematurely because men turn to righteousness, nor will it be delayed because iniquity abounds. . . .[Jesus Christ] knows the set time and so does his Father” (Elder Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, 26–27).
cinepro Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Although this quote is from BRM, I do give it pretty significant weight IMHO...It honestly makes me a little sad that someone would so preface the words of an apostle.
SeattleGrunge Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 It honestly makes me a little sad that someone would so preface the words of an apostle.Of all the modern apostles I think he spoke his opinion so much more than the others I would think a statement like that would be a given. His book MD is all the evidence I need. I love him and respect him greatly, but when it comes to throwing out a BRM quote without a statement like that you could easily dismiss it as one of his 1000's of potentially or verified incorrect quotes. By stating such a disclaimer, you can have a higher level of confidence in the validity of a quote that seems to be a lone opposition in this thread. It is not something I would do for any other modern apostle.
Arkholt Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 It honestly makes me a little sad that someone would so preface the words of an apostle. If it was a quote from a General Conference address, I'd completely agree with you. Anything from one of his books, however, must be taken with at least one if not several grains of salt.
Arkholt Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I don't think we have the ability to change the time that the Lord will come. To believe that we can affect the timetable of God, well, that sounds like arrogance of the worst kind. That's my feeling. Perhaps the Prophet can reason and discuss things with him, but I don't see how our actions would really do much.
Eldwynn Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 That's Philmont btw.I do believe that date can be moved up or back by world events. But my opinion of how bad the world will be is pretty low. When a crowd of males pound at my door demanding my male guests come out so they can know them, then the time is near. The Homosexual agenda hasn't progressed that far yet and no, I would not offer my daughters instead in that case; just a generous pelting from a distance with a double-barrel shotgun.Where do you live? I can send you a tin foil hat.
Eldwynn Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 While the name is trademarked, the equation itself is public domain since it has been in wide use for the last 2000 years. This was so clever.
Palerider Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Although this quote is from BRM, I do give it pretty significant weight IMHO...".[Jesus Christ] knows the set time and so does his Father” "Seems Bro. M. was out of step with the scriptures? But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.Mark 13:32
SeattleGrunge Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 ".[Jesus Christ] knows the set time and so does his Father” "Seems Bro. M. was out of step with the scriptures? But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.Mark 13:32Good point, but maybe this has something to do with that..."No man knoweth the day or the hour when the Son of Man cometh." . . . Did Christ speak this as a general principle throughout all generations? Oh no; he spoke in the present tense. No man that was then living upon the footstool of God knew the day or the hour. But he did not say that there was no man throughout all generations that should know the day or the hour. No, for this would be in flat contradiction with other scripture, for the prophet says that God will do nothing but what he will reveal unto his servants the prophets [Amos 3:7]. Consequently, if it is not made known to the prophets it will not come to pass." Joseph Smith (Joseph Smith Commentary on the Bible, p. 112)
Palerider Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Good point, but maybe this has something to do with that...I think I'll let the Scriptures speak for themselves rather than take someone's scriptural commentary on this one.
Arkholt Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Good point, but maybe this has something to do with that...That's all well and good, and it's certainly logical. Unfortunately, I can only see it meaning that whoever the prophet is when the Second Coming is about to happen will get a message that it's coming real soon, and to get the people ready. I don't see that happening, though, until very, very close to the time of it happening.
SeattleGrunge Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I think I'll let the Scriptures speak for themselves rather than take someone's scriptural commentary on this one.Palerider, maybe you're not LDS, but that "someone" was Joseph Smith. I think I'll take his commentary on the scriptures over my interpretation of them any day.
