ELF1024 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 40 Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive thisoath and covenant of my Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved.41But whoso breaketh this covenant after he hath received it, and altogether turneth therefrom, shall not have forgiveness of sins in this world nor in the world to come. (D&C 84)Are you sure of that, cause D&C 84 says otherwise?S W Kimball - Miracle of ForgivenessOur loving Father has given us the blessed principle of repentance as the gateway to forgiveness. All sins but those excepted by the Lord

Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Do you mean Wagon Train to the Stars?Yes. I am sure Consig knew this I..... just..... Never mind.
SilverKnight Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Understanding that Tuscano was part of the September Six, I wonder what members of this board would be among the Consiglieri Seven? You should know up front that Dr. Steuss and Emeliza have options on posts 1 and 2.SteussEmelizaCineproWalkerWBokovoyMercyNGraceSilverknight
WalkerW Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 SK:It is generally accepted among the LDS murder of any type is a major sin against God. But one that while very hard to repent of is forgivable. For someone who has made Temple covenants it is beyond very hard and is as close to impossible as it gets without being impossible.Sin against the Holy Ghost is impossible to repent of because that sinner does not want to repent. So in that limited sense Murder, even mass murder is less severe than sin against the Holy Ghost. And I think "covenant" must be understood in this context. Bushman's historical context of the priesthood and temple endowment in Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling provides a critical insight to how priesthood covenants are to be understood.Priesthood and covenants weren't understood in the limp-wristed way they often are today. Failing to home teach and leaving the Church out of boredom seems to me less severe than mass genocide.
WalkerW Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 SteussEmelizaCineproWalkerWBokovoyMercyNGraceSilverknightMy MDDB reputation is tarnished forever. Thanks a lot. :-P
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 S W Kimball - Miracle of ForgivenessAccording to D&C 84 breaking the priesthood covenant is a sin against the Holy Ghost which is why it says it can't be forgiven in this life or the next. If you got a newer revelation to counteract D&C 84:41 that's fine but trying to twist the words of a prophet to say something he didn't (cause he clearly says that there are sins that can't be forgiven, one of these sins is breaking the Priesthood Covenant).

Additional:Humbly, I suggest that you are too hung up on the letter of the law; to the point where you are missing the spirit of the law.
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Failing to home teach and leaving the Church out of boredom seems to me less severe than mass genocide.Well masturbation seems harmless as well but I am not looking for a mortal perspective on it but an scriptural perspective on it. A lot of things seem to be of no harm of less bad than other things, to men but the scriptures say they are not. Christ said if you call your brother a fool you are damned, does saying someone is a fool really seem that bad compared to murder ect?
consiglieri Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 My MDDB reputation is tarnished forever. Thanks a lot. :-PFortunately, you can sell your appointment to an interested third party. So long as I get half the proceeds.
SilverKnight Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 LDS Guy,Here is a quote I like from Boyd K Packer, known to be one of the more stern, orthodox apostles:I repeat, save for the exception of the very few who defect to perdition, there is no habit, no addiction, no rebellion, no transgression, no apostasy, no crime exempted from the promise of complete forgiveness. That is the promise of the Atonement of Christ.http://lds.org/general-conference/1995/10/the-brilliant-morning-of-forgiveness?lang=eng
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 The Night Stalker, apparently . . .Um.... Star Trek was going to be called "The Night Stalker"? Lol.Sorry SK for the derail.

Tapir Whisperer Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Well masturbation seems harmless as well but I am not looking for a mortal perspective on it but an scriptural perspective on it. You obviously haven't talked to my mother on the subject.

Happy to oblige:9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother
WalkerW Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Well masturbation seems harmless as well but I am not looking for a mortal perspective on it but an scriptural perspective on it. A lot of things seem to be of no harm of less bad than other things, to men but the scriptures say they are not. Christ said if you call your brother a fool you are damned, does saying someone is a fool really seem that bad compared to murder ect?I didn't say it was harmless. I said it was less severe than mass genocide. As for a "scriptural perspective," I am well acquainted with not only my own church's history, but much of today's biblical scholarship. There is a reason I cited Bushman's work. It provides a cultural, social, and historical perspective to our scriptures. Considering home teaching wasn't even invented at the time of D&C 84, forgive me if I find "home teaching fail > mass genocide" to not only be ridiculous, but repugnant.Christ engaged in hyperbolic instruction that was common for His day. The point was not for his hyperbole to be taken at 100% face value, but for those listening to understand the intent of the commandment upon which He was commenting.
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Well then kindly explain how a member who has been baptized, has recieved both the Aaronic Priesthood and Higher Preisthood can be re-baptized after excommunication. This isn't germane to the subject, but let's say it was some legitimate mistake out of pride, like rejecting the prophet, this is not rejecting God but the Church will remove your priesthood and excommunicate you if you try and publicly talk against the living prophet. ORThey could resign from the Church because they have there faith shaken by some anti, and later have a change of heart and rejoin the Church. There is an infinite number or possible situations, this is all speculation though, each case is looked at it's merits so this has not weight at all.Removal of the priesthood doesn't equal breaking of the oath and covenant of the priesthood in every situation, this why the First Presidency decides if someone can be re-baptized or re-ordained into the priesthood, they have to seek the will of the Lord and take case by case to see if the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood was broken. Of course if you think life is a one size fits all when it comes to excommunication then you probably failed to think of it in this manner. If you want to prove me wrong , find me this one thing:Find me someone that has been baptized into the church, or has be re-baptized and had there ordinances restored after committing 1st degree murder. To murder is to break the covenant of the priesthood, so if this has happened than the Church has abandoned the word of God, it is fallen and I am wrong (well my Stake President and I are both wrong).
Jason Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I guess if we really followed the scriptures, we should be putting most Aaronic Priesthood holders to death.Technically what Onan did was not masturbation.
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I am thinking you need a bigger computer screen or a new prescription..........I see that is listed under your avatar. I asked you a question I assumed you were trying to be funny with your response. Hence the "LoL" at the end of my response.Mr. poopie Pants.
LDS Guy 1986 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Considering home teaching wasn't even invented at the time of D&C 84, forgive me if I find "home teaching fail > mass genocide" to not only be ridiculous, but repugnant. That's fine this is the opinion of my Stake President, not the revelations of God, I agree with him, but this is opinions of leaders, not doctrine. Of course the tone of the comment implies you don't care about the facts just how you can make them sound bad.
consiglieri Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Christ engaged in hyperbolic instruction that was common for His day. consiglieri Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Technically what Onan did was not masturbation. Is it okay if we don't go into detail on this one?
