Senator Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Except we claim to 1. Understand the true nature of Heavenly Father2. To understand the true teachings of Jesus3. To understand that forgiveness is more than just accepting Jesus4. To have the gift of the Holy Ghost from proper Priesthood authority, and what the "gift" truly is5. To return and live with Heavenly Father and Jesus.6. To be a member of God
Deborah Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Your enhanced version of the list still does not offer any novel claims. So you think the LDS view of Heavenly Father as a separate personage of flesh and bones is not novel? Or that we can live in the presence Heavenly Father and Jesus?
nicolasconnault Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Hence my -"you might be interested in the Mormon conception of such"- statement.Your enhanced version of the list still does not offer any novel claims. (except for maybe #4)You're right, no "novel claim" will ever sound convincing enough for someone to join, simply because it's so easy to make a claim. Instead, I prefer to use the Saviour's method of convincing people:"Come and see".
elguanteloko Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 It's amusing, though not surprising, to see how this thread has turned into a debate between LDS who explain why they think their religion is worthwhile (you could hardly blame them for doing so), No one can blame them because that was the point of the OP question in the first place.and those who are trying to prove them wrong.yes, people tend to disagree... shocking.
elguanteloko Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Instead, I prefer to use the Saviour's method of convincing people:"Come and see".And this is exactly what I was questioning if you see my responses to DCP.
Libs Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Experience is going to be the best teacher and decider for most of us.We can listen to the testimony of others and read all kinds of wonderful things about the religion, but without an actual personal experience, it is really just all words.
Pahoran Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 So let me get this straight.I really wish you'd try, just once, to do that.1) You believe that an infinitely good and wise God (who is also supposedly omnipotent) would fail so miserably in redeeming his "crowning achievement" that less than .02% of the humans he created would have a chance of gaining the exaltation that you claim he wants for all his creation.2) You believe that every human on Earth should strive to "belong" to another individual who you claim was born to a virgin as the result of her physical relations with a supernatural being, and that by his death he was able to make "forgiveness" possible for all the sins they might commit in life including drinking warm caffeine and being born homosexual?.3) And you believe that all of these assertions, for which there is no physical evidence whatsoever, are "true" and that these unfounded beliefs will make one a "better" person and gain him or her eternal life with a supernatural being who has arranged things so that fewer than 0.02% of his "children" end up living with him for eternity. This is what you believe and preach to the world? Seems like an arrogant, inconsistent, illogical set of beliefs, does it not?It does. But then, that's why you deliberately misrepresented our beliefs that way: to make them seem arrogant, inconsistent and illogical, didn't you?Let's cut to the chase, 44F: your former identity as DrW is the worst-kept secret on the forum. And for my money, the fellow who tried to pretend that a mentally ill mother murdering her children represented the logical outcome of believing in the restored Gospel has absolutely nothing to say to absolutely anyone on the subject of something being "arrogant, inconsistent and illogical."Is that clear?Regards,Pahoran
Vanguard Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 So, why should one become a Mormon? What is that Mormonism offers, really? One should only become Mormon if one believes it's the right thing to do and nothing more. If one doesn't believe such then one needn't join. This cannot necessarily be a commentary on one's reward after this life though.Mormonism offers a more accurate characterization of the Godhead and all things having to do with our relationship with it. Though not the only variable, it stands to reason that a more accurate characterization of all of these things can set the stage for a more meaning-filled life during this temporality.
Senator Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Mormonism offers a more accurate characterization of the Godhead and all things having to do with our relationship with it. Mormonism offers a characterization of the Godhead. Whether is is accurate, compelling, or even interesting, is in the eye of the beholder. For the record, this beholder finds Mormonisms characterization to be all three.
Obiwan Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 So, why should one become a Mormon? What is that Mormonism offers, really? 1. It's literally true, the literal Kingdom of God on the earth.2. It is the greatest system devised that in a balanced and effective way those who live it's principles might become "better" and well rounded and wise people, helping you to be better in ALL aspects of your life, financially, spiritually, temporally, relationships, family, education, wisdom, etc.3. Related to the above it helps you more so become like the Father than any other system.4. It teaches Eternal Truths without any falsehoods or the doctrines of men mingled therein, at least to any significant degree to matter anyway, compared to other faiths which are full of such and no reliability nor consistency at all.5. It helps you be "happier" than any other system can offer.6. Teaches you how to teach and lead others in a righteous and intelligent manner.7. The only religion that actually makes sense and conforms to the Bible in full, and having common sense arguments.8. A "practical" faith, that makes it a part of you, without having any "abnormal" behaviors involved to set you apart from other normal people.9. The only religion with good and plenty of "evidences" for it being from God rather than another man-made religion. The additional scriptures fully matching the Bible, plenty of reliable witnesses to most all restoration divine and otherwise events.10. A religion started basically by religious people who were mostly general christian (Protestant/Evangelical) yet it looks more Catholic than the later manifestations of Christianity.Basically, it's the best of everything all in one place. And if one wants to be better, wiser, and happier as a person, it's the best thing going that will help you get there the most effectively and accurately. So much more could be said, but the bottom line is it is literally Christ's Church on the earth in the Latter Days, and it will help you know truth and return to God with Honor better than anything else. The above basic list are some of the things I saw that helped me choose it over anything else. In time, experience, and learning, including a brief apostasy and being anti-religion/anti-mormon, I came to "know" it is the Lords literal Church on the earth, and I am so thankful that the Gospel is in my life. No matter what happens in my life, I know it is true, and I know God's love and his purposes for me. Why mormonism? Because it is the Rock of our Salvation, His Gospel, His Rock. It is whereby we can get nearer to God than by anything else.
Obiwan Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 What if I never find convincing reasons to joing the Church in this life but I do in the afterlife. Will I be held accountable for not following what I clearly thought didn't make sense or was immoral (assuming I saw the Church's teachings as immoral and nonsensical)? You will be accountable for your thoughts and your actions.God knows your heart, he knows your abilities and talents. If he thinks you were sincere, good, righteous, diligently sought for the truth and way to be in life, then you will be justified before Him, and you will choose him when you know the actual truth of things. But, if he thinks you didn't do what you were capable of doing, where too judgmental when you shouldn't have been, didn't strive to conform your heart and actions to righteousness and humility enough to your ability, then I'm sure you will have "less" justification before him, and will be judged accordingly.I once thought some things with the Church and religion were wrong and nonsensical. But I was wrong. If I had died before I was able to learn the truth, will I be judged accordingly, or will God judge my heart and actions, and what would have been had I had the time, experiences, knowledge, and made the necessary choices to learn the truth? No, he wouldn't, and he won't judge you either. But, you know and he knows if you are procrastinating and not doing what you really should be doing in order to know and be certain things. THAT he will judge.

evangelist Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 If for no other reason to simply drive you critics up a wall. Now that is a good witness, and something to think about!one love
Vanguard Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Mormonism offers a characterization of the Godhead. Whether is is accurate, compelling, or even interesting, is in the eye of the beholder. For the record, this beholder finds Mormonisms characterization to be all three. That it remains in the eye of the beholder is a given though the belief must be that it offers the most compelling characterization. To be sure, these are things that cannot be objectified though what ever could? Nonetheless, a Mormon must believe these things.
ERayR Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Now that is a good witness, and something to think about!one loveI could give many good and sound reasons but you have proven that you won't listen to any reason so why should I waste any more time on you?
Bernard Gui Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 So, why should one become a Mormon? What is that Mormonism offers, really? It offers man the opportunity to play in God's sandbox. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110127.htmlBernard
evangelist Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I could give many good and sound reasons but you have proven that you won't listen to any reason so why should I waste any more time on you?Because you should have some fruits!Ga:5:22: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,Ga:5:23: Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
