Lorenzo Snow and the sacred vision

Hi, I heard an account about one of the past prophets of the church and a vision he reportedly had. The account appears to have only come from his granddaughter. This story talks about him talking to his granddaughter in the Salt Lake Temple and telling her that he saw Jesus Christ on that very spot and he was told to re-organize the first presidency without waiting for whatever time as was usual. Reading the story kind of sounds like a "I know a guy who said he knows someone who said..." kind of thing. I did a quick search about this but can't seem to find anything official about it. How does the church treat this event? What I'm trying to find out is if this story is accepted by the church as factually historic or is it just a faith-promoting story?

I think you have your answer already. Not being able to find it on the churches website, to me, is a great indicator of something.

The institute manual (and accompanying DVD) Presidents of the Church notes it as a fact.

I never denied it as a fact. Just as an FYI.

I also have a feeling it will have a prominent place in the Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Lorenzo Snow priesthood/Relief Society manual which I understand is going to be the curriculum for next year.

It is a fact that his grand daughter made this statement.

It remains unclear to me why said vision was not recorded or mentioned by others. I would not have expected President Snow to keep a secret of such an event, but I guess that is what must have happened for her story to be true.

I've got to dig up the reference, but we discussed this in my 'Teachings of the Living Prophets' class earlier this week. I believe President Snow brought it to/told the Quorum of the Twelve shortly after the funeral of President Woodruff, as they were discussing the matter. Till then, it was generally the practice to wait a few years.

My question is why would this type of communcation from the Lord concerning a church directive, not be cannonized and added as another section to the D&C?

Because it was a communication intended for Pres. Snow and not for the general membership of the church. Every revelation that is given to members of the church is not intended to be broadcast to everyone. That is why Joseph Smith didn't talk about the First Vision for many years. It was intended for him. The same should be our guide. Revelations are intended for the people who receive them and should not be shared with others unless you are moved by the spirit. I have seen members share their experiences and they were not well received. Spiritual experiences are our personal experience and should be kept personal. We should never become so casual with these special experiences that we would share them with just anyone.

PS I have also read that when the Q12 met the following day, the youngest member of the quorum rose to talk. He said that he didn't know if he was speaking out of turn but he thought that the 1st Presidency should be reorganized as soon as possible. Then Pres. Snow told them of his experience. And ever since then, the 1st Presidency was reorganized as soon as possible.

If that's the case then many of the canonized revelations in the D&C should be removed. Several where received for specific individuals only, and not for the general membership.

But it would seem to me that a directive given to the leadership of the church, personally delivered by the Lord himself, which was to henseforth change the protocol of church manuvers, would be something very worthy of canonization.

But that's just me

I surmise the reason it wasn't, was probably because the event never really happened as told.

It feels like you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. His vision didn't contradict any prior doctrine, only the common practice that was not well established.

Even without a vision it makes sense for the new crew to engage and get moving. Nothing revolutionary here is there?

I think you are asking too much for all revelation of a personal nature to be removed from D&C. It is was it is now.

Your last sentence kinda makes this whole thread pointless since there is no way we can prove what he saw or didn't see since all we have is his word, and no corroborating evidence (he was alone when in happened)

Do we have President Snow's journal for that time period? That would be a very important piece of evidence for the claim.

Frankly, I find the story a bit odd. The timing of the organization of the FP is a largely inconsequential matter to the running of the Church. And that is the reason Jesus appears?

At the very least, President Snow should have added "...and the savior told me many other things that I can't record at this time..."

Let us not forget though what President Snow did, he received the revelation to get the Church on better financial grounds, possibly only the President of the church could do that. For all we know maybe Pres. Snow was the man for that job more so then someone else. He also got the Church a toe into Japan, it didn;t take off as planned but something was started. In addition, if he waited Pres. Snow would have died!

I think the reason that he appeared was probably to comfort/counsel President Snow on the original matter for which he was praying:
