A cubit equals one day

I'm responding to this again, because I think it is important.

Tarski, our favorite critic, nailed it, and it seems we are just blowing past his comment which is highly significant

In modern cosmology time can be measured in the same units as distance (or the other way around)! If I were LDS I would find this pretty intriguing. On the other hand, in the usual way of doing this, one day would not correspond to a cubit. Off the top of my head I would say that a cubit of time would be more on the order of a 1/300,000,000 seconds.

I found a quote which paralleled his,

"...which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit", or that as one of Kolob's days is the unit of celestial measurement, by which the size of the worlds are measured when the foundations thereof are laid, by which the distances of the suns and planets are regulated, and all the creations of the Holy Ones controlled. That this cubit, which was the unit of measurement of holy things on this earth- the ark of the tabernacle, the Temple, etc. was also the unit of measurement when this earth was created..."

discussion here

It is written by an "Elder George Reynolds" who wrote in Millenial Star.

It is very interesting article and I think is highly relevant to this discussion

But I guess I am the only one who thinks so?

*thinking to self*

Makes you wonder why the missionaries don't talk about one-day-to-a-cubit, Kolob and kokaubeam in missionary discussion #1 just after speaking about God the Father and His Son Jesus....

Because they want to discuss more important things?

Kolob IS Jesus Christ.

And all of us are kokaubeam.

Page 163 of my Millenial Star article says:

The annual circuit of the earth - that is one year- is represented by the length of the base circuit of the pyramid, and each day of twenty-four hours by four cubits. Or each day of our year is represented by one cubit on each of the four sides of the pyramid, each side representing in its whole length one year of this earth. Or one day to a cubit, as stated in The Book of Abraham. Can anyone explain to us why the pyramids were so built that one cubit should represent one day exactly, if Abraham did not teach this to them, and if he did, then we have called the pyramids to bear witness of the truth of his book, which they most assuredly do, and at the same time to the truth of its translation by the Prophet Joseph Smith.

Does this make ANY sense to anybody? I can't figure out what it is saying. Is it total jibberish or is there something - anything- to this?

I think it is saying that the dimensions of the pyramids bear witness to the truth of the book of Abraham, since there are as many cubits as there days in the year, and in Abraham cubits equal days.

Dunno that I agree, but there you have it.

Jesus wants me for a kakauBEAM! to shine for him each day.

Seriously, is this idea a truth revealed to modern prophets or a cute intellectualization invented by some BYU professors?

I have to question anyone who thinks the Pyramids have anything to do with Abraham or the Hebrews in Egypt.

The Bible tells us that the Hebrews were "brick Builders" (aka Mason) and that the only cities they built in Egypt were entirely made of brick.

(see Ex. 5: 7-8, 14, 16, 18-19)

Ex. 1: 14

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

Even the Tower of Babel was made with Bricks.

Gen 11

3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

This is the same Chapter that gives Abrams geneology.

So cities made of Brick is what we should be looking for. Which Brings me to Lehi. Did they bring brick building technology to the Americas?

There are those brick furnaces down in south america and the bricks have writtings on them they are having difficulty deciphering.

Seems like jibberish to me but it makes me want to ask the following: It is said that for God, a day is a thousand years for us. What "year" are we talking about?

"Tropical Year"? "Calendar Year"? "Sidereal Year"?

In any case, the length of a year has been changing. There seems to be nothing cosmically special or stable about an earth year so why should a god-day turn out to be exactly 1000 earth years? Why precisely 1000? This number 1000 is only special sounding because we use base ten arithmetic. Considering all this makes the 1000 year thing sound made up and ill-considered.

Maybe we should be looking for a binary amount of years? 1024 anyone?

That would seem to make earth years very special indeed. But why should they be and which year are we talking about?

After reading it three times, I think it is saying that the number of cubits (how measured?) along the length of one side of the base of the pyramid (which pyramid?) equal the number of days in our year.

I don't know if this means 360-days, or 365-days or 365 1/4 days.

It seems that there is a lot of fudge room in making such determinations if we are doing it on a post hoc basis.

If there is something that says the Egyptians viewed it this way, that is one thing, but this has the smell of something that 19th century white guys came up with and are trying to impose back on the Egyptians, which is not as helpful to the analysis as if we have something written by the ancient Egyptians saying that they viewed one cubit as being equal to one day.

The explanation to Figure 1 of Facsimile 2 gives a strange, almost offhand comment, wherein a unit of length is correlated with a unit of time; specifically "one day to a cubit."

Could it have anything to do with the use and size of sundials back in the day?

Thanks, -Wade Englund-

Does anybody have any idea what on earth this means?

Does it make sense from an ancient Egyptian or Hebrew point of view?

You are inquiring into mysteries. You are trying to find out mysteries. The Lord advised His disciples not to answer questions about mysteries (even if they knew them). Instead, He directed them to instruct such people to inquire directly from the Lord:

JST, MATTHEW 7
:

9 Go ye into the world, saying unto all, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come nigh unto you.

10 And
the mysteries of the kingdom ye shall keep within yourselves;
for it is not meet to give that which is holy unto the dogs; neither cast ye your pearls unto swine, lest they trample them under their feet.

11 For the world cannot receive that which ye, yourselves, are not able to bear; wherefore ye shall not give your pearls unto them, lest they turn again and rend you.

12 Say unto them,
Ask of God;
ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

13 For every one that asketh, receiveth; and he that seeketh, findeth; and unto him that knocketh, it shall be opened.

14 And then said his disciples unto him, they will say unto us, We ourselves are righteous, and need not that any man should teach us.
God, we know, heard Moses and some of the prophets; but us he will not hear
.

15 And they will say, We have the law for our salvation, and that is sufficient for us.

16 Then Jesus answered, and said unto his disciples, thus shall ye say unto them,

17
What man among you, having a son, and he shall be standing out, and shall say, Father, open thy house that I may come in and sup with thee, will not say, Come in, my son; for mine is thine, and thine is mine?

The morale of that passage is that if you want to know the mysteries of God, it is not impossible. It is perfectly feasible

The right way is to obtain it directly from the Lord

We are also admonished to first "study it out in minds". Which initially always entails engaging in speculation as we digest the information we have at hand. Since it appears that our Sunday "schools" are not the appropriate place for such investigation, then I would suggest that this forum be used as a substitute.

I agree ... but I fount the tone of the questions a bit off putting:

"Does anybody have any idea
what on earth
this means?

"Does it
make sense
from an ancient Egyptian or Hebrew point of view?"

Emphasis added.
