I saw Pa Pa's post today about the Shaken Faith Syndrome book, and it led me t a link where the book was discussed a few months ago, which discussion initially centered around the cover. THAT discussion had me rolling my eyes. (But I think an old lady and young man should have been featured on the cover as well. After all, it's not just young women and old men who suffer from the syndrome. )After perusing that thread, this one caught my eye, and when I came to LOAP's post, I bust out laughing. (LOAP was fairly critical of the Syndrome's cover.)Anyway, you can ignore this post. It's just musings . . .

Just as good (if not better in some ways) as Shaken Faith Syndrome. I like how in this book you take the offensive, so to speak, in presenting the evidence and are not just rebutting arguments. I am greatly impressed with the information you have presented in this volume. Well done.The critics are going to get heartburn over this one for sure.

Cedar Fort (the publisher) told me it could take 1-3 months for DB to get them in their stores (it's not even on their web site yet). If you get a chance to call them, I'd really like to know if they actually have it on their shelves. The DB in Ogden (where I live) doesn't have it yet.(BTW, I see OF Faith & Reason listed on Borders and Barnes & Noble sites now).MikeMy apologies, I haven't been on in awhile, and obviously this is a moot point now, but yes, your 80 evidences was on the shelf when I said it was. I think it was like the second or third book in on the top shelf far left. Same place I saw it today! I don't know if we're just special or something, we got another shipment of the Joseph Smith Papers in a week and a half early (and I got one of the last 2 copies this time!).I even have proof in my wife whom I pointed it out to saying "hey this guys also on that website you think I spend way too much time on!)

My initial expectation was to have "evidences" such as prophecies, healings, miracles, and other such things taken from the life of Joseph Smith. "Hits" in the Book of Mormon are interesting, but it almost seems like there could be a separate book just focusing on evidences of the Book of Mormon.I can't speak for other critics, but I don't really see anything heartburn-inducing from the table of contents. Most of the evidences have already been discussed ad nauseam here at MADB in numerous threads, and each had plenty of room for doubt or alternate, equally plausible theories.But it is a much better looking cover! I'll check it out next time I'm at an LDS bookstore and see if the detail in the book puts some weight to it.

Dale Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I just got my copy a few days ago. I see some items in the book that would take a critic skilled on the topic to answer it. I am not saying such a critic would be right, but i would not see anything in the book to end the debate. While i am impressed with some of the evidences, i am cautious not to let myself get into a false sense of security.The book has sparked some concerns about some of the evidences used. I guess because of my reading critics writings i have more issues than any mere faith promoting book can get into.

Instead it offers nearly 90 pro-LDS evidences that support the claim that JS received revelation for unique LDS scripture and doctrine.

The book is defensive-- it tries to ameliorate the potentially problematic issues. In Of Faith and Reason I try to point out many things which favorably support belief. It takes the offense, so to speak. I see it as a companion volume to SFS, but approaching belief with a sword rather than a shield.
Dale Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 The only need as far as i see your books as not meeting is i see a need for hefty alternatives to skeptics books. What i would like to see is a big believers alternative to Mormonism: Shadow or Reality?. Plus i would like to see in print are sets of scholarly essays covering topics like are raised in books like American Apocrypha. Faith promoting books are ok, but critics have an advantage in they have gotten out some deep materials getting out their research. Zondervan's The New Mormon Challenge though reviewed by Farms has not a similar LDS volume i can think of. The most hefty type of volume i can think of are books like Echoes and Evidences of the Book of Mormon. It is not that scholarly answers have not been made to critics issues, but that the answers are scattered in a variety of publications. A problem results when a persons only type of apologetic resource are your two books and they are still overwhelmed with the Tanner's big book. Your stuff is ok with smaller fry critics, but not with meeting critics able to throw everything at the reader. So i see your books as well meeting a basic current need but should not be an end to publishing projects.

I agree that there needs to be more information available to those seeking answers, since they can have the kitchen sink thrown at them.You might want to watch what is happening on the FAIR wiki. There is an effort going on to tackle issues on a much larger scale. It may take time for these larger projects to fully materialize but you can rest assured that a broader spectrum of issues is going to be dealt with.
