Stargazer Posted May 9 Posted May 9 We don't seem to celebrate the anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day in the United States. I think there are mentions of it occasionally, but since our danger in World War II was not existential, as a people we didn't feel the danger quite like they did in the United Kingdom. We were surrounded by enormous oceans that protected us from any and all comers, so even if we were defeated in the Pacific or in Europe we were impregnable in our own land. But the UK was faced with an implacable and well-equipped enemy facing them just across a narrow body of water, the English Channel, an enemy which had so far conquered all in its path. So yesterday being the 80th anniversary of VE Day, there were remembrances everywhere. There was a wreath-laying in Westminster Abbey in London by King Charles and William, Prince of Wales, a military aircraft fly-by over Buckingham Palace, and everywhere there were beacon lightings. Here's my contribution: 1
sunstoned Posted May 13 Posted May 13 I searched for VE Day 2025, but found mostly UK celebrations and few remembrances in the US.
