Christian Mormon Posted April 7, 2023 Posted April 7, 2023 i cant find a definite answer. some scriptures say that it'll be a Christian temple other scriptures say it'll be used to sacrifice animals. so it's hard to decide what kind of temple it's going to be. the Book of Mormon seems to say it will be a Christian temple because Jews will accept the gospel. I have heard someone say it will be an Old Testament temple and then convert over to a Christian temple. whatever answers there are I've just need scripture support.

I have heard someone say it will be an Old Testament temple and then convert over to a Christian temple. whatever answers there are I've just need scripture support. Short Answer: It appears that A) Jews who have accepted the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ will build the temple, B) that the construction will be under the direction of the presiding authorities of the Church, and C) the rites to be officiated in that temple will be those found in the Restored Gospel. However, this stuff is not firmly stated in scripture, and is instead derived mostly from non-canonized statements. Some resources: 1. Per this article, regarding the references in Isaiah to “the mountain of the Lord’s house” (Isaiah 2:2), "{t}he only possible contextual meaning of Isaiah’s oracle is that the 'house of the Lord' of which he spoke is a temple of the people of Judah to be built in Jerusalem, upon Mount Moriah, in the last days" (see also here). 2. Also from the above article: Quote The final component of Isaiah 2:3 is a well-known couplet: “for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” ... A contextual understanding of “out of Zion shall go forth the law” can be a bewildering issue for Latter-day Saints, since they have generally been led to think that this phrase is describing something entirely different than Jerusalem and the law of Moses (a topic I will address shortly). Yet, it is contextually the case that to say “out of Zion shall go forth the law” is simply another way of saying “out of Jerusalem shall go forth the word of the Lord.” The two phrases of Isaiah’s final couplet in this synonymous parallel are expressing the same thing, identifying the same city, and indicating the same divine law. To say “out of Zion shall go forth the law” is also to say “the word of the Lord (will go out) from Jerusalem.” Isaiah’s great temple prophecy is indicating that when a latter day temple is built in Jerusalem, it will be the location from which God’s word and sacred law will go forth to the people of Israel. 3. Wikipedia briefly speaks to this issue: Quote Latter Day Saints believe that the Jews will build the Third Temple before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ,[48] and after the Second Coming the Jews will accept Jesus as the Messiah. Most Jews will then embrace the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then, it is believed, the Third Temple will be God's temple as Christ reigns on the earth, and it will become the Jerusalem LDS Temple.[citation needed] There will be many LDS Temples but two main temples will jointly serve as the central governing places – the Jerusalem Temple will function as the resurrected Jesus Christ's Eastern Hemisphere governing place and the New Jerusalem Temple in Independence, Missouri will function as the resurrected Jesus Christ's Western Hemisphere governing place.[citation needed] Both of these two temples will have thrones for Jesus Christ to sit on during his millennial reign.[49] ... 48. Doctrines of Salvation: Sermons and Writings of Joseph Fielding Smith, 3 vols. compiled by Bruce R. McConkie. Bookcraft Salt Lake City, Utah.[volume needed][page needed] 4. This site includes a compilation of scriptural and other Church references to the future temple in Jerusalem, including the following: 5. Ether 13:5, states that the temple "should be built unto the house of Israel." 6. D&C 124:36-37 states: "36 For it is ordained that in Zion, and in her stakes, and in Jerusalem, those places which I have appointed for refuge, shall be the places for your baptisms for your dead. 37 And again, verily I say unto you, how shall your washings be acceptable unto me, except ye perform them in a house which you have built to my name?" Baptism for the dead is, I think, a uniquely "Christian" belief and practice (and even there it is a very limited doctrine/practice). 7. Joseph, in the History of the Church, 5:337, notably used the passive voice: "Judah must return, Jerusalem must be rebuilt, and the temple, and water come out from under the temple, and the waters of the Dead Sea be healed. It will take some time to rebuild the walls of the city and the temple, &c.; and all this must be done before the Son of Man will make His appearance" (emphasis added). 8. In contrast, however, Charles Penrose was fairly clear (from JD 24:25) : "The work is moving on for the gathering of the Jews to their own land that they may build it up as it was in former times; that the temple may be rebuilt and the mosque of the Muslim which now stands in its place may be moved out of the way." (Note: The Journal of Discourses is an uneven source.) 9. See also John Taylor comments (from JD 18:23) (emphases added) : "I remember, some time ago, having a conversation with Baron Rothschild, a Jew. …[I told him that] You will build a Temple, for the Lord has shown us, among other things, that you Jews have quite a role to perform in the latter days, and that all the things spoken by your old prophets will be fulfilled, that you will be gathered to old Jerusalem, and that you will build a Temple there; and when you build that Temple, and the time has arrived, ‘the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his Temple.’" 10. And Orson Pratt (from JD 14:46) (emphases added) : "The whole of the twelve tribes of Israel are to return back to Palestine in Asia and rebuild their city of Jerusalem and a temple within that city before, and preparatory to the coming of the Lord." 11. And here (from JD 15:41) (emphasis added) : "If you want to know about the time when the sun and moon are to be darkened, and when the stars will no longer give any light, and when there will be total darkness over all the face of the earth, here is an event predicted so that you cannot mistake. When you see the nations of the earth, especially the heathen nations, and also those north of Jerusalem–the great nation of Russia and other nations on the continent of Asia, together with many in Europe, gather up against Jerusalem after the Jews have returned and rebuilt their city and Temple..." 12. And here (from JD 18:21) (emphases added) : "Then, when the Gentile nations shall reject this Gospel, and count themselves unworthy of eternal life, as the Jews did before them, the Lord will say–'It is enough, come away from them, my servants, I will give you a new commission, you shall go to the scattered remnants of the house of Israel. I will gather them in from the four quarters of the earth, and bring them again into their own lands. They shall build Jerusalem on its own heap; they shall rear a Temple on the appointed place in Palestine, and they shall be grafted in again.'" 13. And here (from JD 18:7) (emphases added) : "The Jews dispersed among the Gentiles will not come and sing in the height of Zion, or but very few of them, they will go to Jerusalem ... {a}fter awhile, when tens of thousands of them have gathered and rebuilt their Temple, and reestablished Jerusalem upon its own heap..." 14. And here (from JD 19:2) (emphases added) : "By and by there will be a Temple built at Jerusalem. Who do you think is going to build it? You may think that it will be the unbelieving Jews who rejected the Savior. I believe that that which is contained on the 77th page of the Book of Mormon, as well as in many other places, in that same book, will be literally fulfilled. The Temple at Jerusalem will undoubtedly be built, by those who believe in the true Messiah." 15. And Wilford Woodruff (from JD 14:1) (emphasis added) : "Christ [will] not come until the Jews [have] returned to their own land and [have] rebuilt the City of Jerusalem and the temple there." 16. And from JD 15:35 (emphases added) : "As I have been reading to you today, the Jews have got to gather to their own land in unbelief. They will go and rebuild Jerusalem and their temple. They will take their gold and silver from the nations and will gather to the Holy Land..." 17. From TempleStudy.com: Quote The Latter-day Saints also see the reconstruction of a temple in Jerusalem as one of the signs of the times of the Second Coming of the Savior. Whether it will be built by the Church or the Jews or the Jews under the direction of the Church or will later come under the direction of the Church after the Jews are converted to Christ is unclear (Do you know of any studies clarifying this?). What is clear is that the saving ordinances of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ will be performed therein at some point, under the authority of the priesthood of God, as they are performed currently in 125 temples around the world. 18. From AskGramps (emphases added) : Quote The temple in Jerusalem, Israel has been prophesied by many. The prophet Ezekiel described the construction of the temple (Ezek Ch 40 – Ch 48). ... Now, your second question was about who would build them and for what purpose. The temple in Missouri has already been addressed. But the temple in Jerusalem will be built by Jews who have accepted the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. More recent apostles have addressed the return of the Jews as well. “When the Jews receive the fulness of the everlasting gospel…they will return to Jerusalem as the Lord’s true legal administrators to build up Jerusalem as a Zion and to place again on the ancient site the temple of the new kingdom.” — Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, p. 300; —John Taylor, The Gospel Kingdom, p. 293 ” The temple in Jerusalem will not be built by Jews who have assembled there for political purposes as at present… But it will be built by Jews who have come unto Christ, who once again are in the true fold of their ancient Shepherd, and who have learned anew about temples because they know that Elijah did come… —Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, pp. 279-280. “The building of the temple in Jerusalem …will be directly related to the Gospel as restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith and to the glorious Second Coming of the Lord. It will not be part of any form of sectarianism… and will never be clouded by any uncertainties as to its purpose. Any temple of the Lord…will be His abiding place, His sanctuary, His designated dwelling wherein ordinances of salvation will be performed. All of this requires His revealed direction and the services of His…authorized priesthood.” —Church News, August 7, 1971, p. 16 How is this to be fulfilled? Pres. Wilford Woodruff (then pres. of the quorum of the 12) said: “… the time is not far distant when the rich men among the Jews may be called upon to use their abundant wealth to gather the dispersed of Judah, and purchase the ancient dwelling places of their fathers in and about Jerusalem, and rebuild the holy city and temple.” —Millennial Star, vol. 41, p. 244 Thanks, -Smac 2

Kenngo1969 Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 (edited) I am loath to disagree with Brother Penrose, or with any of the Brethren, for that matter. However, while, somehow, I, too had always had visions of the Temple to be built at Jerusalem being akin to people jockeying for limited space on an overcrowded airliner, (of Jews jockeying for space with Muslims and vice versa, and of the Temple displacing the Mosque at the Dome of the Rock—and, therefore, of already-overheated tensions being inflamed still further), other sources I have consulted paint a somewhat different picture. For what it's worth, try this on for size, from my notes taken from David J. Ridges (2019) 100 Signs of the Times Leading Up to the Coming of Christ, Springville UT: Cedar Fort Publishing. Quote W3. Sign 76: A Temple Will Be Built in Jerusalem 1. Jerusalem Temple and Dome of the Rock – No scripture says that the Jerusalem Temple must be built on the exact site of the Dome of the Rock/Al Aqsa Mosque. There is plenty of room, Brother Ridges says, on the Temple Mount for both. 100 Signs 267. 2. Jerusalem Temple and BYU Jerusalem Center – Leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ gave their word that the Center would be used for educational purposes only. 100 Signs 267. 3. Ordinances Performed – Whatever ordinances are performed would be under the direction of Priesthood leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith said that sacrifice would return, at least briefly, as part of the restoration of all things. When John the Baptist restored the Aaronic Priesthood in Section 13 of the Doctrine and Covenants, he stated that it “would never be taken again from the earth until the sons of Levi do offer an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.” Modern-day Priesthood holders are those “sons.” See also 3 Nephi 24:3, Doctrine and Covenants 84:32-34. That offering will occur at the Temple in New Jerusalem. Larry Barkdull (March 13, 2013) “The Latter-day Offering of the Sons of Levi,” Meridian Magazine, https://latterdaysaintmag.com/article-1-12356/ (last accessed March 18, 2021). Note: Information on this point comes from various sources, and not necessarily from 100 Signs. For What It's Worth. Also, keep (while, alas, I do not have a reference, a shortcoming for which I apologize) in mind that Joseph Smith said that sacrifice would return, at least briefly, as part of "the restoration of all things." Nah, some practices are more universal than others, it's bringing foreign spirits with you that you let usurp the Jerusalem Spirit, like the Dame Folly replaced the Lady Wisdom... also if the Jews host sacrifices, they should get ride of the Babylonian Lunar Calendar, and adopt a Solar Calendar like in Enoch or Jubilees or the Christian Calendar. Or else each Feast will always be on the wrong day. Edited April 8, 2023 by Pyreaux
