There is a steaming cauldron behind this fellow, and a vapor is escaping from apertures in the globe which is placed on a container of hot coals. His pose suggest an attitude of supplication to or conjuring from the globe. This may be the artist’s interpretation of wizardly objects used by those men in their practices.
