rongo Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 I'm looking (in vain) for a film strip (not a short movie) called "It All Started with Thad." Not "What about Thad?" --- that's a Cipher in the Snow-esque short film. Everyone always says, "Oh, you mean 'What about Thad?'" Even a still shot of Thad (in all of his dorky glory) from the film strip would do. A rich elder in one of my districts made us all Thad T-shirts. We did what we called "Mittags Matinee" for lunch --- watching film strips with the cassette tape narration. Some real gems. I wish I had thought to snag film strips and the player before all of the libraries threw them out. There is literally nothing on the internet from "It All Started with Thad."

I can't remember if I actually tossed it or the list is somewhere in storage. I specifically remember thinking "how common was "Thad" back in 1960 Utah...because I don't think it was about the same character. You might try the "ask us" function of the Church History department. Added: I googled it and found an exmormon Reddit talking about it ( do you have safe settings on as their language at times might be enough to block it). They said Gordon Jump is the dad and the child actor was Thad Carter in both filmstrips and they just used his real name. Apparently Thad got the ball rolling for talking to missionaries. Yes, it was Gordon Jump (WKRP in Cincinatti). Thad hears the stake president talk about member missionary work and brings literally everyone in the neighborhood into the home to hear about the gospel (milkman, teacher, police officer, etc.). There were some classics in the 70s "keep the commandments, or terrible things will happen and you will feel really guilty" mold. "Das alte Amerika spricht" (ancient America speaks) was a good one. There was one about abortion that was pretty graphic (tiny, severed hand on gauze with bloody instruments), and interviews with women with their identities hidden who deeply regret their abortions, voice quotes from President Kimball and Elder Faust. Really just a wide range. That's a good idea to ask the Church History department.

I thought it might be at the BYU Library as they had the old video collections and I was going to collect the info back when I was trying to create a ward library ultimate database, but don't know if they had filmstrips and it is not coming up in an online search.
