You are missing the point if you think it is attacking the person and not their work.

Why does it matter to you what credentials RJS has or doesn't have?

You are the one claiming it matters to me when it doesn’t.  I believe you have created a straw man because Robert has come to the conclusion that J Smith does not have academic credibility based on the work you have presented here. You seem to think Robert moved from the idea of no academic credibility to therefore poor scholarship when it was the reverse.

It is mind boggling to me you seem from your reaction to think that bringing someone’s work onto the board to be viewed would not result in an analysis and critique of it and therefore conclusions about the level of skill in translation he has. Perhaps you are used to places that just accept what anyone posts as valid from the start?

And it is possible to critique a small amount of work and guess the likelihood of the quality of the rest. For example, if you knew the work of a car mechanic who had made significant errors of work in the five cars you were aware he had worked on, it is reasonable to decide not to take your car to them to be worked on even though they had done work on dozens of cars in the past and you did not know the quality of the work they did on those.

I've invested a significant amount of time in studying his work ...

Why bother?

Why spend time studying his work while you are recommending we don't need to?

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain..." - that is the essence of what you are saying, while you are yourself behind the curtain-- how do we study YOU as much as you studied HIM?

Double standard.

Contradictory.

No credibility for either of you.

If it doesn't matter to you, why are you participating in this discussion and trying your best to discredit RJS?

If you don't care, then what are doing? Are you just a heckler trying to get under my skin?

What looks it like to me as that Dan set the tone in this thread that it was okay to treat me with hostility and to ignorantly write someone off as clueless without any real investigation. You and others then jumped on that bandwagon and joined in.

The disrespectful and condescending way in which you continue to address me is very unbecoming of a Latter-day Saint. We ought to be able to reason things out together without being disrespectful and condescending.

Anyway, I'm done with this fruitless argument.

That you keep thinking I am trying to discredit the man indicates a strong bias that is interfering with understanding what I am actually saying. I know nothing of the man to discredit. I had have just seen examples of his work.

if you actually want to understand what others are saying, I would strong suggest telling yourself to ignore your belief we are attacking the man and focus on what is being said about the work. Saying the work is not scholarly is not automatically saying the man is not a scholar since a scholar can produce such work. It is saying the work does not meet a scholarly standard.

You're speaking in riddles or trying to move the goal posts.

The debate began over whether or not their was any plausibility in his interpretation of the name Mahonri Moriancumer, with an immediate attack claiming that the man knows absolutely no Hebrew and knows nothing about translation.

Using the Hebrew Lexicon at Bible Hub and simple logic, I showed that his interpretation of Mahonri Moriancumer is remotely plausible, even though it does have some problems. If people still want to disagree with his interpretation of the name, that's perfectly fine, but insisting that it has no plausibility and that his interpretation shows no understanding of Hebrew at all is either disingenuous or woefully ignorant.

The teeny tiny snippet of his work with an actual Hebrew text from Hosea 1 showed that he did know Hebrew. Now the argument is that he was sloppy and therefore not a scholar.

It's a fruitless debate, clearly the attack dogs have been let loose on RJS (and me for defending him). Sound logic, reason, and civility have been thrown to the wind.

Since you insist you don't care anyway, let's just drop this pointless debate. This is the type of contention which Jesus said was of the devil.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

I never said that people "don't need to" study RJS' work. I have said over and over again that in order to judge whether he knows Hebrew or knows what he's talking about one needs to actually look at his work.

Again, I have no idea what you're talking about. If you want to know if there's any value in the work of RJS and if he knew what he was talking about, read his work. I made it available for all to read. Nothing is being hidden behind any curtain.

I really I couldn't care less whether or not you think I'm credible.

You appear to be an unstable person. You keep saying that you aren't going to talk to me any more, but for some bizarre reason you feel the need to keep lashing out at me. I haven't done anything to you and hold no malice towards you. Go in peace.
