Just got this email.

We took this action today amid increasing financial pressure on the BSA from litigation involving past abuse in Scouting. We are outraged that there have been times when individuals took advantage of our programs to abuse innocent children and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting. We believe victims, we support them, we provide counseling by a provider of their choice, and we encourage them to come forward. Our plan is to use this Chapter 11 process to create a Trust that would provide equitable compensation to these individuals.

They are done. It was a long time coming and the Brethren were wisely guided to create troops/units within the church long ago and avoid the BSA troops in the surrounding communities. A sad tale

I don't know about you, but it tells me something about how much financial support the Boy Scouts of America/Scouts USA/Whatever-the-next-new-name's-gonna-be-to-try-to-avoid-the-possibility-of-offending-someone received from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that the only way the former organization can survive without receiving that level of support from the latter organization is to declare bankruptcy.  I'm glad the Church of Jesus Christ isn't keeping Scouts USA solvent simply so Scouts USA can pay millions of dollars in settlements for misconduct by Scouts USA leaders.

Yes, but it is sad that yet another of our great institutions has been destroyed.

Indeed.  In no way should my saying that I'm glad that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't have to deal with the consequences that would ensue if it were to remain affiliated with Scouts USA be interpreted as a celebration of the latter organization's demise. :(
