I have not used those terms nor do I use those terms. However, I was caught off guard by Kindley's comment, paraphrased, would you identify a child born deaf as one with a birth defect?  I had never thought of it in this context. Society creates sacred cows and almost never uses the same standard for all things because of society's demand that the sacred cow never is gored by truth, facts, or reality.  We identify deaf children as having a birth defect. We identify children born with any form of physical problems as those with defects. 

Why is that acceptable except when we talk about those with sexual differences?  Can they not be identified as a defect?  Where is the standard here and when is it applicable and when is it not?  Does an individual with any and all sexually deviant behaviors just known as simply a different sexual attraction? Why not?  Who says this sacred cow is acceptable, but that over there must face reality and be condemned as truly sick or deviant?

Are all birth defects negative or is it better to think of it as a challenge caused by some degree of difference?  If they are just challenging then what is the problem?

I don't see why one would want to use that term.   Most often when someone is born with what is commonly referred to as a birth defect, the parents and doctors work towards a cure for that defect or attempt to fix it.  That doesn't really apply to someone born with heterosexual attractions or someone who is gay, IMO.  We're trying to get away from the old teachings that being gay can be cured.  Those are the teachings that have changed over the years from the church leaders.
