It was fun and you avoided loser syndrome due to the group effort thing. If I remember right the Miamaids won (due to one of those dedicated dads and her daughter being really into engineering the perfect car). My ward did something similar. We had a cub competition, a girls competition, then an Open class competition for any adults that wanted to make a car.
