The thing that has helped me most to be more "thick skinned" is a woman who understood why I feel hurt when I hear those topics and doesn't try to make me feel ok about the topics. Her acknowledgement of my pain helps me to shed the pain and become stronger. After losing one of our sons to addiction and homelessness, Sis Gui and I would tear up when missionaries left and returned or just from watching the priests bless the sacrament. We have learned that there is compensation in rejoicing with them rather than feeling bad that our son isn't doing that. Sis Gui is much better at it than I am. I've had a hard time with facebook posts about missionaries. I asked my mom if she ever had a hard time as my brother is an addict and homeless still at 46 and she said no, that she rejoiced with the families. I just figured that she was just a better person than I was. A few weeks ago I read something that made me realize I should be happy for these missionaries so I started just liking the posts. It surprised me how much that did for me. It's nice to hear how it is hard for others, but how they have been blessed by making good choices that are hard. 1
