Ok

It is still not right to infer that a homosexual is more apt to molest a child than a heterosexual.  This horrible crime is committed by both.

In a general sense.....agreed.  In the Catholic Church scandal?  Maybe not.  The book goes into the reasons......but the problems started by in 60s....... it was a really good book....

I think it's unfair and incorrect to insinuate that because a priest is homosexual, he is more likely to be a child molester. .

It may seem unfair, but the Roman Catholic experience is direct and sobering:  Psychotherapist Richard Sipe (priest and former Benedictine monk) estimates that around 6% of Roman Catholic priests have molested children, though that figure is obviously low in some dioceses.  Moreover, he estimates that half of all priests are currently sexually active in some way (with each other, with women, etc.) -- Sipe, Celibacy in Crisis: A Secret World Revisited (N.Y.: Brunner-Routledge, 2003).  Moreover, fully 10% of priests graduating from RC seminaries in 1970 were subsequently accused of molestation.   The National Review Board established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops found that the bishops were to blame for allowing the “smoke of Satan” to enter the Church, and for allowing some seminaries to be taken over by “a homoerotic culture,” which led to a tidal wave of child molestation.

We have been told for years that pedophilia is as likely to be committed by a heterosexual as a homosexual, yet we find that 81% or more of the cases of pedophilia which racked the Roman Catholic Church were homosexual in nature.  In one recent decade alone over 800 pedophile priests were outed in the USA, including several archbishops, while perhaps 800 priests had died of AIDS.  Donald B. Cozzens, The Changing Face of the Priesthood: A Reflection on the Priest’s Crisis of Soul (Collegeville, Minn: Liturgical Press, 2000), 111-119; Garry Wills, Papal Sin: Structures of Deceit (N.Y.: Doubleday/ Image, 2000), 193.

In any case, the Roman Catholic Church is now moving to prevent or discourage ordination of actively homosexual priests, while leaving currently ordained homosexual priests in place.  http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccatheduc/documents/rc_con_ccatheduc_doc_20051104_istruzione_en.html .

As lesbian Tammy Bruce frankly pointed out:

Quote

A majority of gays, I believe, have their first sexual experience as a minor with a gay adult, and almost every gay and lesbian knows that’s true.  We need to be willing to address that.  Los Angeles Times Magazine, June 2, 2002, p. 18 (this is backed up by the research of Masters & Johnson, Human Sexual Inadequacy [1970]).

I read the reviews and may be interested in reading it.  I have close family members who are Catholic and even one who is a Catholic Priest, so I have some of my own feelings regarding this topic.  I believe the Catholic church should allow their Priests to marry (for a number of reasons).  But we will see if that change is ever made.

But, I do not believe that a homosexual man or woman is more prone to sexually molest a child that someone who is heterosexual, and I object when that's hinted at.

I did not mean to hint it.  It is just that the facts in THIS case, it might be applicable......based on the reasons that the offending priests were there in the first place......maybe so...I look forward to hearing what you think when you read the book

You are most welcome.  Again, I look forward to hearing your opinions after reading it.  I read the book when I was Catholic and impressed.

Had the OP questioned why there is an institutional loyalty in ANY institution which allows for abuse of all kinds to take place, I think there could have been a different discussion. Making a pumpkins and peas comparison with the LDS church was not helpful. Having said that, I recently watched a short video on Henry VIII and Cromwell ( the other one ) . Cromwell facilitated the abuses by Henry which resulted in the deaths of several of Henry's wives and political friends and enemies. Cromwell eventually ran afoul of Henry and lost his head over it. The video presenter asked, " why didn't Cromwell see this coming, after all he abetted Henry throughout ? " The same could be said of many underlings in business or government or churches. Is it pride.... or fear ?

But most of us should give some thought to demands or requests made upon us.  We need to teach our children to stop and consider any requested action, and to just say "no," when there is any doubt, or until parents can be consulted.

We had a quarterly program in Primary teaching this theme once, registering kids for handprints, teaching general safety, etc.
