I feel good eating chocolate ice cream. I don't make a religion out of it.

True, so why is religion so special? because it promises you eternal life? How is it better than transhumanism?

Because it is mine.

That is a small part of it. For me it is a way of life, of how I understand, and work with other people. BTW If my atheist friends are correct that is just this life then the abyss. None of us will know any differently anyway.

Never said it was better than any other beliefs.

So you are Following the Pascals Wager?  Secular trans-humanism also promises eternal life.

Cryonics promises you a second chance, how is religion better?

No. Just a point for discussion. There are lots of religions that promise eternal life. But I belong to only one of them. The one that offers Eternal Life as God. That is but one small consideration for me. For me it is a way of life here and now. To try to truly love God, my fellow man, and repent when I don't.

I don't like the cold. :)

but what if someone tells you that Santa Clause gives Christmas meaning?

Please tell me the difference between belief in a personal God and belief in Santa.

but it is required in our LDS doctrine

and even if our universe is finite, it may be 100 times bigger than our observable universe.

I am not convinced LDS doctrine requires an infinite universe. Admittedly if it does not it probably requires an infinite number of universes.

It is almost certainly bigger then we can see but we have no idea how big and universal expansion means mortals will never know. If the Universe continues to expand galaxies will get further and further apart. Far distant future creatures that somehow come to be in our galaxy may be convinced our galaxy is all that is as there will be no light from other galaxies to see.

It promises a fullness of happiness. Transhumanism tends to take a more practical outlook.

It's the same thing. The universe means "All existing matter and space considered as a whole"

Multiverse is just a word to confuse non-physicists.

No, an infinite universe would mean all space is contiguous. Multiverse suggests another universe you could not fly to no matter how far you travel. The downside of the multiverse theory is there is no way to prove or disprove it until we come up with a way of detecting other universes.

A belief?  No difference.

But you cannot have faith in something that does not exist, according to Joseph Smith.

It really sounds impressive, but, within the context of my post, it is meaningless garbage.

While Jesus rose from the dead and brought others with him secular transhumanism has never delivered on its immortality promise. Even if it did there is no promise that it will happen in my lifetime.

Cryonics is a cute idea but freezing something does not really preserve it. Crystallizing the liquids in our cells by freezing them ruptures them. It would take a massive repair job to fix a frozen human body and we have no idea how we could do it. Even if immortality comes eventually it appears entropy will bring down the Universe and your society of immortal demigods will fall with it.

You are going from a statement of faith to a statement of certainty. Classic Post Hoc ergo Propter Hoc Fallacy.

A more accurate description of Cogito, ergo sum would be "I am therefor I think" . ;)

Multiverse and Universe is the same thing, just ask.

Now you are talking about bubble regions of the universe, but like I said Multiverse and Universe is the same thing.

Hawkin joins the conversation by asking Dawkins a question.  After an explosion and sparkles, Dawkins gives his answer to the impossibility of life

Not all that hard in a very large universe. Just need heat sufficient to allow for liquid water, some carbon, and a few trace elements, and time. Given that there are about 200 billions stars in our galaxy, and about 200 billion galaxies in our known universe, chances are pretty good that life is common.

That is not a circular argument. We have plenty of evidence that we are here.

SEE https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circular_reasoning

The more we find out about our universe the more likely there is that the earth is. Whether there is life as we know it on other planets has yet to be determined. Intelligent life is a different question. Sometimes I wonder if there is intelligent life on this planet. ;)

Posting on a discussion board will do that.

You'll never be able to prove either idea but you can still know the truth by believing what God can tell you about it.

Just think about it: How would you ever be able to prove that the universe we are in now doesn't go on and on forever in some direction if you never run into some kind of barrier and you know you are not just going through the same space over and over again?  Even if you spent forever trying to see if it ever would ever come to an end you would still never reach a barrier in space somewhere that would let you know that was the end point in that direction... if the universe never did come to an end of it's space in that direction.

And even if there is an end somewhere out there but very very very far away just how much of your eternal life would you want to spend just seeing if you could get to an end, if there was in fact an end to it somewhere out there?

And how would you ever prove you could step into another universe, if there was one?  I could say it's still part of the same universe and you wouldn't be able to prove otherwise.

I define the universe as the one place where all other places exist and I challenge anyone to prove to me that all of it ever comes to an end.  And by all I am referring to the infinite.
