Emergency Kits: What Should You Store?

Resent history, say over the past hundred years, tells me (just me, my opinion only) that large amounts of stored food/supplies are not practical and probably not very useful.  Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy brought large scale flooding and power outrages.  People's houses were washed away or under water.  If they have food storage it would be gone too.  Travel was difficult.  The same thing could be seen in large scale earthquakes like the one in San Francisco in 1906.  Most food/supply storage would be destroyed in collapsing buildings.  In times of war, like WWII, any stored food or supplies would be appropriated by whatever army was in the area.  Plenty of stories about this in Germany in 1943-1945.

The idea of a government collapse or such, and we are just left on our own to hunt and grow stuff and home school our children in our retreat cabin until order returns is just pure fantasy.  The things to prepare for are for short term disasters, just like all the all of the recent disasters have been.  You need food, water and medical supplies for seven days, and it needs to be portable.  A back pack comes to mind.  This is what I have.  I call it my get the H#%* out of Dodge bag.  It has food (power bars), 100oz Camel back water pouch, water purifier pump, emergency first aid supplies, emergency blanket and poncho, multi tool, pocket knife, fixed blade knife, radio and batteries, flashlight, gloves, sun glasses, map, money, 9mm pistol. and ammo.

In a real melt-down paper money may be more paper than money.  Who knows?

But a real melt-down is not what the church, red cross, or any normal organization is preparing for. If you want to prepare for Armageddon, fine. But be up front about that because it's a much different set of goals than emergency preparedness.

I say don't save a thing.  Turn all your resources into giving to everyone else and let it ride.  If you die in some catastrophe after having lived a life of charity you'll be better off in eternity, I figure.

An added bonus to that is other's might see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.
