Circular Reasoning & The Woodruff Quote

Recommended Posts

The recent changes to CH1 have touched off a firestorm on social media. At least two of my friends have made reference to the OD1 quote from Wilford Woodruff.

The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the programme. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty.

Here's the circular reasoning.

As Latter-day Saints, we know that if any of these men were to act of their own desires and not in the name of Christ, God would be swift to remove them from their calling and the Church. Considering that hasn’t happened, it’s safe to say they are still doing the Lord’s work.

The leader of any church could make the same claim of removal for leading that church astray. Would not then non-removal prove that the leader is not leading that church astray?
