readstoomuch Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Blake Ostler did an interview for MormonDIscussion with Bill Reel. It is only available on the premium membership which is 12 dollars a year. I will say that sometimes Bill pushes my sensibilities and I disagree. I also feel like I have gotten my twelve dollars worth. I have enjoyed Blake Ostler`s writings, though his theology/philosophy writings are way over my head. A few points that came up included that he still goes along the same lines that he did with his essay The Book of Mormon as a Modern Expansion of an Ancient Document (Dialogue, 1987). He also discussed his take on BoM geography. He (Blake) had a spiritual experience with blacks receiving the priesthood and talks about his views of the process of the blacks being prohibited and restored as far as the priesthood. Also, his take on LGBT issues. (warning: if this becomes a LGBT thread I will shut it down. plenty of those threads are around). I struggled with starting this thread but a couple of ideas kept coming to mind. Blakes experience as an intellectual who has published widely and thought through most issues. Another big idea that Bill`s podcast and MormonMatters are about the only intellectual podcasts I encounter that are faith promoting. This isn`t an advertisement, but for a few weeks in a row I have been touched by Bill`s podcasts. I have gone through some really great periods of MormonMatters with Dan Wotherspoon. I would`t mind supporting Dan, but since it is under the umbrella of John Dehlin`s OpenStories Foundation I have not supported it at this time. 3
Scott Lloyd Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 Blake and I went to the same high school. He was (and still is) my classmate's kid brother. I remember him as being kind of brash, but who could have known back then he would make the name for himself that he did? I have high regard for both Blake and his older brother, Craig, who, by the way, is on the religion faculty at BYU.

I have listened to some of those podcasts, and I enjoy them as well, even though I do end up disagreeing with the host/guests from time to time .... and I have expressed this to them ; ) -Stephen

I'm curious if anyone would expect anything other than to disagree with the host and guests from time to time? I think the purpose of the podcast is to get us to think (hopefully in a way that promotes faith), not preach an absolute truth. 1

Would anyone mind telling me basically what his take is on BOM Geography out of curiosity?
