The all male priesthood and the past history of polygyny has as much if not more in my experience to cause a belief that Mormon men are sexist.Hm, have to agree regarding the all male priesthood, but then I don't view that necessarily as a belief or core doctrine, but I do believe that it coupled with the fact that we got heavily involved in the fight against the ERA has caused us to be viewed as sexist. There are other religions which have an all male priesthood which are not viewed that way, so I would say the political activism plays the bigger role.
Calm Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 My husband's worse experiences weren't even in the US so IMO American politics at least in the past (Mitt Romney may have brought more attention to it) has little to do with what he encountered. And the ERA was old news and no one cared about it for the years he was in the US originally.

And the ERA was old news and no one cared about it for the years he was in the US originally.Actually, I think the primary campaign may have helped somewhat because the two Mormon candidates took a more moderate approach on a lot of social issues than others in the primary. People have not forgotten the ERA struggle out here that is why the OW excommunication was discussed, but not Dehlin. Non Mormons don't know or care about him.

I have only lived in the south and the northwest (which is quite liberal), but they are not the east coast. It takes all kinds and makes the world interesting hearing about other parts of the US and the world. I can promise you that in Middle East the conversation about JD and the ERA rates an absolute 0 on the frequency scale. 1
