After receiving his UCB doctorate in history, Hugh took a position as lecturer in history and social philosophy at the Claremont Colleges (1938-1942). In March of 1942, the Selective Service Board classified Hugh as 1A. On Sept 28 of that year, Private Hugh Nibley enlisted in the U. S. Army at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California; his serial number 19160134. He ended up as a master sgt in the 101st Airborne Division before driving a jeep ashore at Normandy.
