Interpretation Of Isaiah 4:1

I do not mean to sound jaded or mean spirited, but I wonder if we just stayed out of the Middle East if the combatants would just kill each other off and the rest of us could just go on with our lives?

So why was it not delivered in our day, but delivered to people in Isaiah's day, using the language of Isaiah's day?

I'll take four and add...as much as we like our countries to be Island's someone will find a way to attack if they hate, the Islanders must leave and put a stop to it, until they come again. Time and distance used to protect us, but the world is now too small.

I used those words out of pure exasperation with the situation. I would rather do the dishes, and write Science Fiction than try to figure the Middle East out. There are so many forces at work there that I can not possibly comprehend the end of it all. Most people in the world abhor the violence, but there is the word of God that says that peace is impossible.

 

Genesis 16:12 He will be a wild donkey of a man;

    his hand will be against everyone

    and everyone’s hand against him,

and he will live in hostility

    toward^[b] all his brothers.”

 

What are we to do with that? So Ismael's brothers were created to die in warfare?

 

I must say that I find this so dismaying. Can the efforts of mankind have no effect upon the outcome of history? Is this our fate, or is God somehow perverted?

 

I was(?) Muslim, and love the words of Muhammad PBUH. He was the first man in human history to document rights and safety for women in The Constitution of Medina, and yet I am to believe that no matter what decent and devout Muslims do, their fate is sealed? Yallah !!! It makes me want to stand in the place of desolation and rail at God!

 

Obviously, I am not going to do that, and were it possible, I would be more likely to go to Heavenly Father in tears, and lay upon his lap and complain that I do not understand what is happening. Perhaps I am not meant to understand these things, but to simply be obedient and meek?

The general thrust of these chapters is to liken the House of Israel to women who are playing the harlot (cf. Isaiah 49-54, Ezek. 16, 23; Hosea 1-2).  But the Lord promises that these women (Israel) will eventually repent and return to their husband--the Lord.  Consequently, one could interpret Isaiah 4:1 as representing the House of Israel clinging to "one man," the Lord, and receiving his name to take away their reproach.  That Israel is represented by seven women (the daughters (plural) of zion from 3:16?) could be understood in the same way as John's seven churches in Revelation--i.e., the complete or whole house/church.

Large portions of Isaiah were delivered in our day via the Book of Mormon.  We also have the Book of Isaiah in our Old Testament so it is "delivered to us in our day".  The BOM was written anciently for our day. Isaiah was written anciently for our day as well, that is why it is called prophecy, something written anciently for a future time. Isaiah wrote it in his own language.  That is the language prophets write in. Like most prophets, Isaiah was given a vision of the history of the world.  He saw our day and was commissioned to write about it. He used events from the past, his present, and even the future, that he saw in vision, to weave a tapestry of the future end times events. It takes a great deal of "searching to uncover the message he is unfolding.  It is prophecy after the manner of the Jews. Isaiah didn't know the future names of the places he saw in vision so he likened them to places and events from his own times. For example, Egypt was the worlds super power at the time of Isaiah.  So Isaiah used events from his time relative to Egypt to describe events that will happen in our time.  In other words, when Isaiah writes about events that happened or will happen to the worlds supper power, Egypt, he is actually prophesying about today's supper power, the United States. Read chapter 19 and apply the US to Egypt and see what you learn.

 

Jesus Christ gave this admonishment in 3Nephi23... 

 1 And now, behold, I say unto you, that ye ought to ^asearch these things. Yea, a commandment I give unto you that ye search these things diligently; for great are the words of ^bIsaiah.

 2 For surely he spake as touching all things concerning my people which are of the house of Israel; ^atherefore it must needs be that he must speak also to the Gentiles.

 3 And all things that he spake have been and ^ashall be, even according to the words which he spake.

 4 Therefore give heed to my words; write the things which I have told you; and according to the time and the will of the Father ^athey shall go forth unto the Gentiles.

 5 And whosoever will hearken unto my words and repenteth and is baptized, the same shall be saved. Search the ^aprophets, for many there be that testify of these things.

 

The Book of Mormon is written for us in the latter-days. It's prophets saw our day and prophesied about it in great detail. Christ, also knowing that the BOM was being prepared for our day included this admonishment to "search the words of Isaiah"  not just to read them but to search them. We, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are identified as "Gentiles", in the BOM. If it were not important we search them, Christ would not have given this admonishment.

 

Avraham Gileadi  is one of the foremost experts on Isaiah.  He is the one that I reference on the Isaiah 4:1 quote. Here is a copy of his explanation of the that verse for those that didn't click on the link.

 

As so many men are killed in the great war, a disproportionate number of women survives “in that day” (bayyôm hahûᐣ)—God’s Day of Judgment. Another reason is surely that in general women are more righteous than men, perhaps even by a ratio of seven to one. In contrast to the flirting women we saw previously, these women aren’t under a covenant curse, having prepared a sufficiency of food and clothing in anticipation of the evil time (cf. Isaiah 3:10). They consider it a “reproach” (ḥerpātēnû) not to raise their own families, and they appeal to the men who survive to marry them.

Here is what I wrote on my blog regarding this verse (for the Old Testament Sunday School lesson):

 

While some suggest this means polygamy will one day be restored, it really is a metaphor. The daughters of Zion have been left desolate and sitting on the ground alone. Zion will do anything it possibly can in order to redeem itself. In ancient days, it was better for a woman to be married than single. Even if only marrying for the name alone, a woman would be better off and viewed by others as acceptable.

So with Israel and all people today. If they wish to have their reproach taken from them, they must take hold of one man, even Jesus Christ, and take upon them his name. Today we do this through developing faith in Christ, repenting of our sins, receiving the ordinance of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and then receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost as an internal sign that we are Christ’s people.
