halconero Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Good to know...will definitely stick to locals then when my own tree doesn't produce enough.Depends on the locals. If they have a packing house (warehouse) for their cherries they're probably still sending most of the good stuff as export. A lot of the places that I visit are small operations and it's the same. Some of the lower quality stuff is what makes it the farmer's market/local stand. I'm not saying that it's impossible, just very hard. Just ask the local growers if they export any and if they say yes you'll have your answer.Anyway, sorry for derailing the thread.Maybe I can relate this by saying that many of the buyers that I deal with are Chinese? My personal feelings are that the Church will have to have a strong local leadership in place before anything "open's up." The Chinese, in my experience, are very big on having a Chinese leadership, rather than a foreign one, with any organization on the mainland. There will be foreign employees, but the majority of the managerial staff will be nationals. I feel that the same will have to be the case for the Church in China. There will be no importing of American, or any other country, branch presidents, leaders, etc as has been done in other countries. 1
canard78 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 That's because all the good stuff gets sent overseas. No joke.My job is to be a liaison between the temporary workers they bring up from Mexico and the owners, as well as taking care of quality control and shipping at the warehouse. Anything big, firm, or sweet is sent to Hong Kong, the UK, Thailand, France, etc. The less desirable cherries: the ones with less sugar content, less firmness, no stems or more defects are kept for domestic buyers. You haven't seen a good cherry in years because they're all on boats or planes taking a world tour.Is that because Americans tend to eat less fresh fruit? I really struggled to find much when I was in Utah a couple of years ago.
CV75 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Who do you think he was speaking to? I have an idea, but it might cause this thread to be locked up.Ha-ha! Then your answer isn't all that much on target, is it!I think he was obviously speaking to the general membership (and of a lot more than just boorish patriotism), to apply as individually inspired. Everyone hopefully takes away what the Lord wants him to receive from General Conference talks.

Except it doesn't make much sense to preach to the choir so, yeah I think that was probably targeted at what you refer to as the boorish patriots.
CV75 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Yes. Except it doesn't make much sense to preach to the choir so, yeah I think that was probably targeted at what you refer to as the boorish patriots. No, our GAs speak to everyone. This is the the only way the choir, the non-choir, and optehrs can hear and apply their messages most approrpiately, as the Spirit directs. For example, I find his talk to have dozens of other applications. Yet only 2 or 3 proposed themes have been brought up on this board, as if they were the only message to be gotten out of it!

CV75 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 That might be because those were the ones that were primarily important to the controversial issues with which this board deals on a regular basis. This is why saying something like, “I think the Church is making a conscious effort to turn down the Americanization melody, in particular Pres Uchtdorf !s Conference addresses were aimed at this,” when the talks were not particularly aimed at that, shows that a number of principles are being conflated in the thinking.
