CarlWatkins Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Sister Jean Stevens, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, is the first woman ever to give a prayer in general conference. There are things that the Church does out of custom and things that the church does commandment from God. Obviously there is no mandate that a prayer in conference by delivered by a priesthood bearer or it wouldn't have happened. We love our sisters; they contribute much to the spirituality of a meeting. And just for the record, I didn't hear any whining. We should bag this kind of talk - except where whining really occurs - in front of our temples over gay marriage and such. That is truly despicable!

That is truly despicable!"Whining," as used on this thread, seems to be a metaphor for social media campaigns intended to embarrass and exert public pressure upon the Brethren. In my view, that's unseemly in a gospel context and setting. 1

Just disgusting. There are many ways to protest things PW. Whining is one of them. There is also pouting, throwing temper tantrums, crying bitter alligator tears to a third party, making mountain range out of a molehill, and then there is sometimes acting like an adult. 3

I don't consider protesting outside of a temple outside the realm of 'acting like an adult.' Or inside the realm of whining, throwing temper tantrums, etc.You may disagree with protesters, but calling them despicable or isolating their cause as whining is simply laughable and shows an obvious bias. You don't even know what I did or didn't imply. You didn't even ask before you judged me and judged me quickly. I just find that rather interesting? You judge me harshly for judging others harshly. Are you exhibiting a case of character projection?

You judge me harshly for judging others harshly. Are you exhibiting a case of character projection? This is pretty ironic, because I wasn't really responding to you calling protesters despicable... I did start off by saying that I really couldn't tell what you meant. Please don't judge me either lol.I would still appreciate some clarification on what you did mean, if I was terribly misconstruing your comment. Also, I really wasn't meaning to offend. I wasn't sure if you were siding with the original poster (who I was referencing when I was talking about calling protesters despicable, not you), and decided to defend my case and let you clarify if I was wrong. I really didn't put any words in your mouth, I was referencing the previously quoted post that you were replying to, and now you're accusing me of judgement. If you weren't siding with him, then I didn't mean to offend, I was trying to address an idea, and tried to make clear from the start that I really didn't know what you were implying. Are you exhibiting a case of character projection?Poison well has been removed (see above).
Stone holm Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Guess I am missing something here, when I have seen the word "whining" used it is usually being used in a demeaning reference to women who the person using the term thinks do not know their place which is usually reserved for them in the kitchen and nursery. Did I miss a memo or something? 1

Did I miss a memo or something? On the other hand, when I see the term used in a metaphorical sense, it is without regard to gender as applied to those who are chronic and petulant complainers. Some of the biggest whiners I've observed are among the males of the species.
