The Church Has Done More For Gay Marriage Than Any Other Organization

When the church called upon its members to donate all they could to support Prop 8 I was pretty upset at the church taking such political action. While I acknowledged their right to do so, I felt that pushing Mormon beliefs through the political system was inappropriate. Perhaps God had a plan all along. In stepping back, I realize that the church supporting Prop 8 and ultimately being successful in getting it passed has been the single most important turning point for the gay marriage movement. Without the passage of Prop 8, I am sure gay rights would not be where it is today.

A couple of months ago, New York passed gay marriage. It was in the news for a couple of days and then no more news. If Prop 8 had failed and California still had gay marriage, it would all be old news. California would just be another state on the list of those legalizing gay marriage. No one would be talking about it. It wouldn't be constantly in the news. It has been over 4 years ago, and still Prop 8 is at the forefront of the news. People have studied the arguments on both sides and more and more are siding with gay marriage. Every time the news has two sides debating gay marriage, the public has become less sure of the arguments against gay marriage. Just look at how different the political landscape is on this issue from where it was 4 years ago. It is nothing short of amazing. By having Prop 8 go through the legal process, people have gotten to see what the real legal issues are surrounding gay marriage. Most of the arguments against gay marriage that were strongly touted early in the process have been consigned to the dust bin. You rarely hear that if gay marriage passes, then people will want to marry barn animals for example.

Every time Prop 8 goes through a court review, people get an honest look at what the real case is for and against gay marriage. I believe that each time that has happened, more people favor equal rights for gay couples. They see gay families that look more similar than dissimilar than their own. And they understand more clearly why marriage is important to all Americans even when their religion may not approve. Passing Prop 8 may very well be the most significant reason why the majority of Americans support equal rights for gays marriage.

So thanks to all those Mormons who supported Prop 8. The gay movement could not have done what it has done without your help. Prop 8 passing will forever be a pivotal moment for the gay rights movement and the Mormon church will always be a part of that pivotal moment. God does indeed work in mysterious ways.

Thanks.

All sarcasm aside the Supremes may uphold Prop 8 and DOMA might be thrown back to individual states. Additionally there are still thirty states that have banned gay marriage while only a few have upheld it. Time will only tell that it was ultimately a mistake to have done so.

So,following your logic, if the church wants to promote abortion on demand, then it should speak out against abortion. If it wants to promote capital punishment, then it should speak out against capital punishment. If it wants to promote slavery it should speak out against it.

Of course, the Church should never mention any of these topics because it would be using its influence in a political fashion, and that is undemocratic.

God had us make a stand so that, ultimately, his judgement will be just. With the deterioration of the family will come the moral fall of our society.
