Wade,

Welcome to the club of "Stop-Trying-tU-Persuade-via-Intelligent-Discussions", or STUPID for short.

It just doesn't work in this format. Maybe in a one-on-one with an honest partner.

Personal insults/inuendo aren't necessary.

Good words for us all to strive for:

44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Are you suggesting that I am not honest?

Given the defensive responses to your post, evidently this format is also not the best for cracking even relatively benign jokes. LOL

Thanks, -Wade Englund-

Mine was just as humorous as Zeta-Flux's comment.

rockpond and Daniel,

I did not suggest your are dishonest. I did not personally insult you. I did not insult by inuendo.

I did suggest that this format does not work as well to persuade others as other formats (such as one-on-one discussions). I did suggest that I (and by inuendo, Wade) were "STUPID", which I'm glad to see he took as a "relatively benign joke".

Now back to your regularly scheduled gay marriage thread.

Wade, what seemed like insinuations that those with whom one disagrees are STUPID, dishonest, and then defensive, does not strike me as "benign humor."

At least we agree on one thing--this board, which gratefully promotes respectful dialogue, is likely not "the best format" for such comments.

Zeta, while you didn't name names, your meaning towards those who disagree with you and Wade seemed... unflattering, at best. I apologize I misread you. This topic is fairly sensitive, and I've noted that humor is often misconstrued on message boards, especially in sensitive topics. Regretfully, I don't read much remorse in your response, but did see a bit of its own dose of defensiveness. Perhaps we can all learn something about how others' perceive our online dialogue.

Daniel2,

I appreciate you unwittingly underscoring my point.

It is just that you, again, got it exactly backwards. The STUPID acronym was NOT in reference to those who disagree with Zeta-Flux, it was in reference to he and I. Sheesh.

Thanks, -Wade Englund-

I have been at this for a long time, and throughout I have watched to see if the numerous arguments I have raised may have caused even the slightest difference with those I oppose. And, while early on I sensed some positive impact, nowadays it is beyond nothing. If at all, it seems as though my efforts are causing the cement of their views to set and harden.

Your discussion points, reason, and arguments do provide substance to those friendly to marriage but lack either the sophistication or time to match your presentations. For that, thank you.

The Southern Baptist Convention just released a new poll on the subject of whether or not most Americans consider sexual orientation as a civil rights issue:

Southern Baptist Convention Poll More Bad News for Anti-Gay Activists

The Southern Baptist Convention’s polling arm LifeWay is out with a new poll revealing widespread support for gay rights, particularly among young people. According to the survey, a clear majority of Americans believe that “homosexuality is a civil rights issue like gender, race and age,” agree that same-sex marriage is “inevitable” and oppose employment discrimination against gays and lesbians.

The denomination is a fierce critic of marriage equality and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and last year passed a resolution “opposing the idea that gay rights are the same as civil rights.”

Richard Land, the denomination’s top political spokesman, has claimed that the Devil is behind homosexuality and warned that gay rights will lead to divine judgment and “paganization.” While the SBC believes it is wrong to consider gay rights a civil rights issues, Land compared his own anti-gay activism to Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership of the Civil Rights Movement.

Key findings from the poll include:

64 percent of those polled agreed “it is inevitable that same-sex marriage will become legal throughout the United States.”

“80 percent of Americans disagree that employers should be allowed to refuse employment to someone based on their sexual preference.”

58 percent of respondents agreed with the question: “like age, race, and gender, homosexuality is a civil rights issue.”

A majority of Americans believe rental halls and landlords should not be allowed to discriminate against same-sex couples.

“More Americans do not believe homosexual behavior is a sin than those who believe it is a sin.”

The poll also found that women, young people and people with college degrees were more likely to favor gay rights.

LifeWay’s survey appears to line up with a new bipartisan analysis of exit polls which found that opposition to marriage equality is concentrated among the elderly, white evangelical Christians and people without college degrees.

It's worth noting that these polling results coming from a religious organization that is strongly opposed to LGBT equal civil marriage and non-discrimination rights, as opposed to a liberal source.
