Where Did You Learn About Polygamy (Or Multiple Sealings) From?

I cannot remember a time that I did not know that Mormons had more than one wife. It was long before I joined the LDS Church that I knew that. In fact, I think I had to learn that they no longer had more than one wife.

I knew of it before I converted, we discussed it with the missionaries before we were baptised.

What did the missionaries tell you about it? (Just curious) Did they tell you any specifics or was it just a general acknowledgement that polygamy was practiced in the early church? I think most people know, at least, that much. It is the "specifics" that tend to rock the faith of some..

I learned about Mormons having multiple wives as a child long before I converted ( I converted as an adult)

The number 1 question my non-LDS friends asked me after I was baptized was how many wives I would have.

Its pretty 'common knowledge' that all Mormons have multiple wives out in the real world(ie non-Utah) thanks to news stories about the FLDS and other polygamous groups and also shows like Big Love and Sister Wives.

I thought the reason for practicing polygamy was because so many men died on the way to Utah, I asked my missionaries and they agreed that was the reason; Which was a good enough answer for me, it was much later that I learned that was not the case, but it didn't affect me at all. It was practiced, now its not - so what?

No disrespect to the poster but this poll is silly because everyone and their dog know Mormons practiced polygamy, the better question is when/where did they learn of Joseph Smiths polygamy to over 33 women?

Everyone knows about polygamy, but how 'bout the 14 year old wifes? or the absolute public denials by Joseph Smith and others? or the fact that polygamy was a major accusation in the Expositor? or that Joseph Smith promised eternal exaltation to the family of the girls he proposed marriage to? , or that he married women whose husbands were sent on missions? those are among the more pertinent questions that seem to matter more.

I'm not sure I've got time to address all of these and there are more informed apologists than I who probably have good references. If these items truly concern you try starting a thread listing each of them and ask for answers.

In Africa, we take pride in having large families - PM inclusive. Every culture has things which distinguishes them, LDS/JS was PM. It doesn't mean that God wasn't with them; just that He gave 'em space for trial & error thereby trusting Him more... {my personal resolve on the matter}
