Baptism Talk

A neighbor of mine has been taking the missionary lessons. She's mid/late 40's and always asks very intelligent questions. I often view topics on here for opinions or answers to some of her questions.

Anyway, she's getting baptised this weekend and is very excited. (She did get a little depressed because there was an unexpected missionary exchange the other day and one of the missionaries she bonded with is now gone.)

I've been asked by the bishopric to give a small/quick talk on baptism. Or she asked that I do it.

Kind of recently returned to church myself and in no way an expert. Not sure what the expectations are?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any ideas or topics that you believe I should make sure to include in my talk?

Thanks in advance.

What I usually enjoy doing is talking about when Christ was baptized in Matthew 3. And also about when He taught Nicodemus about it in John 3.

Just discuss its importance, and what it means to you.personally. Keep it to about 5 minutes or so I'd say.

The first eleven or so verses of 2 Nephi 31, which talk about why Christ was baptized even though he was sinless, would also provide you a suitable text for a talk on baptism. :)

I wish I could remember the recent baptismal talk in my ward with a woman in mid 40's... it was fairly brief, no more than 5 - 7 minutes. Talked about the example set by Christ... how baptism is the "gateway" back to the Father... and a new beginning...

You might look at lds.org and see what they say about baptism... others who posted here gave good scriptures... do you have a Gospel Principles manual? You might want to read about baptism generally because it outlines general doctrine beginning on page 115... page 119 addresses the new beginning aspect, and lists additional scriptures.

Good luck...
